Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The glass-walled executive conference room on the fourieth floor of Whitmore Enterprises overlooked the entire sprawling expanse of Phoenix and the desert valley beyond.
At 9:00 AM sharp, the ten members of the board of directors were seated around the massive teakwood table. The atmosphere was thick with corporate tension. Word had already leaked through executive gossip channels that Derek Whitmore’s high-profile engagement to Vanessa Holt had catastrophically collapsed the previous afternoon.
More importantly, emergency audit notices had been flagged on the directors' tablets at 6:00 AM.
Vanessa sat near the head of the table, flanked by her father, Arthur Holt—a founding senior partner of the venture fund and a man whose graying hair and tailored navy suit commanded absolute intimidation. Vanessa looked composed, though her eyes were rimmed with a hard, defensive edge. She had spent the last two hours spinning a narrative to the board: Derek was unstable, erratic, and suffering from a mental breakdown brought on by executive burnout.
The heavy glass door opened.
Derek walked in.
He wasn't wearing his usual corporate armor of a rigid tie and charcoal jacket. He wore a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Behind him walked someone the board never expected to see in the executive suite: Clara Mendes, holding a black leather briefcase, wearing a clean, professional charcoal blazer over her estate manager’s uniform.
Arthur Holt slammed his palm onto the teak table, making the water glasses rattle.
“What is the meaning of this, Derek?!” Arthur barked, his face flushing crimson. “Have you lost your absolute mind? You call an emergency board meeting via an encrypted memo at dawn, and you drag a domestic servant into the executive suite? Security should have thrown her out at the lobby turnstiles!”
Derek didn't flinch. He pulled out the master chair at the head of the table, sat down slowly, and linked his fingers together on the surface.
“Sit down, Arthur,” Derek said quietly. “And save the theatrical outrage. You’re going to need your energy for the next twenty minutes.”
Vanessa leaned forward, her lips curling into a tight, venomous sneer. “Derek, if this is some pathetic retaliation because I told you the truth about your emotional attachment to the staff, it’s gone too far. My father has already initiated a motion for a temporary medical leave of absence for you.”
“A medical leave,” Derek repeated, a cold smile touching the corner of his mouth. He turned to Clara. “Clara, would you please distribute the files?”
Clara stepped forward. With calm, precise movements, she laid a thick manila folder down in front of each board member.
Arthur Holt looked down at the documents, scoffed, and reached to sweep them off the table. But before his fingers could touch the folder, Derek’s voice cut through the room like a razor.
“If you touch those papers, Arthur, I don't just strip you of your partnership—I hand these wire transfer records directly to the federal prosecutor handling non-profit fraud.”
Arthur’s hand froze mid-air.
Vanessa’s confidence flickered, dying out completely as she watched several board members—seasoned investors who managed billions in public funds—open the folders and begin reading.
Inside each folder were the exact digital trails Derek had found in his safe: the systematic embezzlement of funds from the Holt-Whitmore Youth Initiative, the falsified quarterly reports, and—most damning of all—the digital metadata proving that the authorization signatures had been routed through an encrypted server leased under Vanessa’s personal holding company.
“For the past fourteen months,” Derek said, his voice echoing clearly off the glass walls, “over seven hundred thousand dollars designated for underprivileged community art programs has been systematically siphoned into offshore accounts and private venture holdings controlled by Vanessa Holt and her immediate family.”
“That’s a forgery!” Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. “He manufactured these documents! He’s trying to cover up his own erratic behavior by framing me!”
“Manufactured?” Derek raised an eyebrow. He clicked a small remote in his hand.
The massive projection screen behind the boardroom table flickered to life.
It didn't display financial charts.
It displayed a high-definition security camera recording from the private penthouse garage in downtown Phoenix, dated three weeks prior. The video clearly showed Vanessa Holt stepping out of her white Range Rover, opening her laptop on the marble island of her kitchen, and inputting the exact administrative override code that framed Clara Mendes for the embezzlement.
The room fell into a terrified, breathless silence.
Arthur Holt slowly sank back into his leather chair, the color completely drained from his face as he stared at his daughter on the screen.
Vanessa looked around the table, her eyes darting from director to director, finding only averted gazes and cold, closed-off expressions.
“You... you planned this,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at Derek with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You set me up.”
“No, Vanessa,” Derek said, standing up slowly and resting his palms flat on the table, leaning forward to look her dead in the eye. “You built a house of cards on the backs of people you thought didn't matter. You called a child’s painting garbage because it didn't fit your aesthetic. But you forgot one simple rule about people who clean up your messes: we see everything.”
Derek turned his gaze to the head director. “I move for an immediate termination of Vanessa Holt’s corporate partnership, a full forensic audit of her family's holdings, and an immediate public statement restoring the stolen funds to the community art centers.”

The head director didn't hesitate. He raised his hand.
One by one, every single member of the board raised their hands in unanimous agreement.
