Chapter 8 - A New Neighborhood

The autumn sun dipped below the horizon, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow across the sky above Cedar Ridge. Down on Willow Bend Drive, house number 42 looked entirely different than it had six months ago.

The overgrown hedges had been trimmed back, the dark, foreboding curtains had been replaced with bright white lace, and the ominous porch light that used to stay on all day was now turned off, welcoming the natural twilight. The new owners, a young couple expecting their first baby, were currently busy planting bright red geraniums in the front flower beds.

The dark legacy of Arthur Vance had been thoroughly scrubbed away, replaced by new life, new laughter, and a future that belonged entirely to the neighborhood kids who now played tag near the curb without a single shadow hanging over them.

A few miles away, at the Cedar Ridge Police Department, Officer Jenna Ruiz sat at her desk, finishing up her evening shift report. She paused for a moment to look at a small framed photograph sitting near her computer monitor.

It was a picture taken at the community center picnic a month prior: Lila sitting on Sergeant Avery’s shoulders, laughing hysterically as she held a giant cotton candy cone, with Mark and Sarah cheering in the background.

Ruiz smiled to herself, feeling a deep, abiding sense of pride. In police work, officers often saw the absolute worst of human nature, dealing with the wreckage of broken homes and shattered lives. But every once in a long while, a case came along that reminded them why they put on the uniform every single morning.

The phone on her desk buzzed softly, snapping her back to reality.

Ruiz picked up the receiver with a steady, confident hand. “Cedar Ridge Police Department, Officer Ruiz speaking. How can I help you?”

A cheerful voice on the other end reported a lost dog two blocks over. Standard, mundane, peaceful business.

Ruiz smiled, typed the address into her computer, and dispatched a unit with a calm, reassuring tone. The machine of justice and community protection hummed on, efficient and watchful.
