Chapter 5 - The Siege at Dawn

The storm broke just before four in the morning. Heavy sheets of rain lashed against the massive arched windows of the Voss estate, accompanied by deep, rolling thunder that rattled the glass panes.

Inside the mansion, the illusion of control had completely shattered. Adrian paced the length of the study like a caged wolf, his phone pressed frantically to his ear, trying to reach corrupted judges, bought-off politicians, and private fixers. But none of them were picking up. When a federal investigation flag is raised on major financial institutions, rats are the first to abandon the sinking ship.

Celeste sat frozen in the wingback chair, looking ten years older, her diamond necklace glinting absurdly against her pale, hollow throat.

I sat calmly by the fireplace, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea. Mateo was sleeping soundly in the adjoining guest suite, under the lock and key I had personally secured, safe from the chaos outside.

“What do you want, Elena?” Adrian finally stopped pacing, his voice cracking with exhaustion and raw panic. He looked at me not as a trophy wife, not as a decoration, but as an executioner. “Money? Half the estate? Name your price. We can dissolve the marriage quietly, you can take a billion dollars and disappear to the south of France.”

I set my teacup down on the saucer with a soft, deliberate clink.

“You think this is about money, Adrian?” I asked, standing up and walking slowly toward him. “You stole from charities, you abused an innocent child, and you murdered a defenseless woman because she tried to protect her son. Money doesn't buy back lives, and it certainly doesn't buy absolution.”

Before Adrian could lunge forward in a desperate fit of rage, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion blew open with a deafening crash.

Heavy, synchronized boots echoed across the marble foyer. Flashlights cut through the darkness of the grand hallway, casting harsh white beams against the crystal chandeliers.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!”

The voices rang out with absolute authority. Uniformed agents and federal marshals poured into the study, their tactical gear glistening with rain. At the front of the unit stood Director Vance, my former superior from the federal prosecutor’s office, wearing a grim, satisfied smile.

Adrian and Celeste stood paralyzed as federal agents moved in, reading them their rights and snapping cold steel handcuffs around their wrists.

Adrian looked at me one last time as they dragged him toward the door, his eyes wide with utter disbelief. “How?” he choked out. “How did you get them to move so fast?”

I smiled softly, adjusting the collar of my blouse. “Because, Adrian... I never stopped working for the Department of Justice. You just forgot to check my credentials.”
