Chapter 6 - The Shattered Facade

Finnian’s hands never reached my neck.

As he lunged across the mahogany dining table, the heavy oak doors of the foyer burst open with a resounding bang. Heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway, and before Finnian could take another step, two uniformed police officers flanked by a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped into the dining room.

“Finnian Rhodes? Vivienne Rhodes?” the lead officer announced, his voice booming and authoritative as his hand hovered over his duty belt. “Step away from Mrs. Rhodes immediately.”

Finnian froze, his hands suspended mid-air, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale gray. He whipped around to face the officers, stammering frantically.

“There’s... there’s been a misunderstanding! This is a domestic dispute, my wife is suffering from postpartum distress—she’s not well—”

“I am perfectly well, Officer,” I interrupted, stepping smoothly away from the table and picking up my phone and the Manila folder. “My name is Margot Rhodes. I am the sole legal owner of these documents, and I am formally filing charges against Finnian Rhodes and Vivienne Rhodes for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, conspiracy, and medical tampering.”

The man in the charcoal suit stepped forward, flashing a Federal Bureau of Investigation badge. Special Agent Marcus Vance—not the reporter, but his cousin who worked out of the federal white-collar crimes division, whom I had looped in via secure encrypted channels early this morning alongside the media tip.

“Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes,” Agent Vance said coldly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You’re both under arrest for multiple counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate asset stripping via shell company V.R. Holdings LLC. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“You can’t do this!” Vivienne shrieked, standing up so fast her chair tipped backward onto the floor with a loud crash. “Do you know who my family is? Do you know how many judges I know in this county?”

“I know you’re about to spend the next forty-eight hours in a holding cell explaining why half a million dollars of investor and marital funds vanished into your personal accounts,” Agent Vance replied smoothly, nodding to the local officers.

Within seconds, the heavy cold click of handcuffs echoed through the grand dining room. Finnian didn't fight back; he simply stared at me with eyes full of utter disbelief and betrayal, as if he still couldn't fathom how the obedient, quiet wife he had tried to cage had dismantled his entire empire in less than twenty-four hours.

As the officers led Finnian and Vivienne toward the front door, Alana stood frozen against the bay window, trembling like a leaf. She looked at me with wide, terrified eyes, realizing that without Finnian’s protection or Vivienne’s money, she was entirely exposed as an accomplice to corporate theft.

“And what about her?” I asked, pointing a steady finger directly at Alana. “She’s an active co-conspirator in the embezzlement scheme and the forged medical documentation.”

Agent Vance glanced at Alana, then nodded to an officer. “Bring her in for questioning as well. We’ll let the prosecutor sort out her level of involvement.”

Alana let out a sharp gasp as the officer gently took her arm, guiding her out behind Finnian and Vivienne.

The heavy front door swung shut, sealing off the chaos. The house fell completely, profoundly silent.

For the first time in weeks, the air in the room felt light, clean, and entirely my own.

I stood alone in the grand dining room, surrounded by the wreckage of their meticulously planned conspiracy. My phone buzzed in my hand. It was a text message from Nora, the postpartum nurse:

“Margot? I just got an alert that health services and social work are being dispatched to the address for an emergency welfare check following a tip from federal investigators. Are you safe?”

May you like

I smiled, typing back quickly:

“We’re more than safe, Nora. Send the team. We’re ready to go home.”
