Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Broken

Spring arrived in Ohio, bringing warmer days and blooming flowers to Rachel’s neighborhood. The heavy dark cloud that had hung over Lily’s life for years was finally starting to clear.
Every Tuesday afternoon, Rachel took Lily to child therapy sessions with Dr. Aris, a warm, patient specialist who helped Lily work through the emotional trauma of her parents' neglect.
"She’s making incredible progress, Rachel," Dr. Aris said during a private update in the waiting room. "When she first arrived, she believed that love was something she had to earn by being silent and invisible. Now, she’s learning that she is allowed to have feelings, to ask for things, and to trust the adults in her life."
"She asked me for a puppy yesterday," Rachel said with a soft smile. "A real one, not just watching the dog next door."
"That’s a huge milestone," Dr. Aris laughed. "It means she’s starting to think about the future. She believes there is a future."
That evening, Rachel and Lily walked through the local park. The air was soft and filled with the scent of blossoming cherry trees. Lily ran ahead, chasing butterflies, her laughter ringing out across the open grass.
"Aunt Rachel!" Lily called back, pointing to a small wooden bridge over a flowing creek. "Can we look at the water?"
"Lead the way, sweetie," Rachel said, catching up to her.
As they stood on the bridge, watching the clear water run over smooth stones, Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out the old silver locket her grandmother had left her. She rubbed the worn metal surface with her thumb.
"Do you think Grandma is watching us?" Lily asked softly.
Rachel put her arm around Lily’s shoulders, holding her close. "I know she is, Lily. She loved you so much that she made sure, even when she was gone, that you would always be taken care of."

"I don't miss the old house anymore," Lily said quietly, looking up at Rachel with bright, clear eyes. "I like our house better."
"It’s your house now, Lily," Rachel said softly. "Forever."
