Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum and the Allies

By noon, the chaos had escalated from a family squabble to a full-blown civil war.

I had dropped the kids off at my aunt Sarah’s house—the only adult in the family who possessed a shred of moral compass and hadn't boarded a plane to Orlando. Aunt Sarah had been horrified when she saw the itinerary and heard the full story. She lived just ten minutes away and had readily agreed to watch the kids while I headed to the hospital.

True to form, my phone hadn't stopped vibrating since I walked into the ER nurses’ station.

My stepmother, Linda, had finally surfaced from wherever resort bubble she was hiding in. Her texts were masterpieces of manipulative gaslighting.

Linda: Jenna Marie, your father is beside himself. You humiliated him in front of the entire family. Madison is crying in the hotel lobby because her dream vacation is ruined. All you had to do was keep the kids for a few days. Why do you have to make everything about your martyr complex?

I didn’t reply. I was too busy triaging a multi-vehicle accident victim in Trauma Room 3. For twelve hours, the real world—with its blood, monitors, and life-or-death stakes—completely washed away the petty toxicity of my DNA donors.

When my shift ended at 7:00 p.m., I walked out into the cool Denver evening, feeling exhausted down to my marrow. As I unlocked my car, my phone rang.

It wasn't Linda. It was Aunt Sarah.

“Jenna? Honey, are you off work?” Sarah’s voice sounded tense, laced with a mix of anger and worry.

“Yeah, I just got to my car. How are the kids?”

“They’re asleep in the guest room. They’re fine, sweetie. But… you need to know what’s happening. Your father and Kyle held an emergency conference call with the rest of the siblings this afternoon.”

I leaned against my car door. “Let me guess. I’m officially disowned, written out of the non-existent will, and labeled the villain of the century.”

“Worse,” Sarah sighed heavily. “They’re spinning a narrative that you had a mental health breakdown, that you kidnapped the kids from Madison’s porch this morning, and that they’re pressing charges for extortion.”

I stared blankly into the dark parking lot. “Extortion? For what?”

“They claim you demanded money to return the kids.”

A cold fury settled in my chest. It wasn't shock anymore. It was a clear, calculated realization of who my family truly was. They weren't just selfish; they were maliciously protective of their pristine public image. If Madison and Kyle admitted they dumped their kids on an unwilling relative to go on a luxury vacation, their social standing among their peers and country club associates would crumble.

“Sarah,” I said slowly, “do you still have the original itinerary Madison printed out?”

“Of course I do. It’s sitting right here on my kitchen island.”

“Take a picture of it. Send it to me. And send it to Uncle Robert, too.”

“What are you planning, Jenna?”

“I’m done taking the high road,” I said, opening my car door. “They want to play dirty? Let’s see how they like playing in public.”
