Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

The giant projector screen flickered to life, illuminating the pastel-decorated ballroom in harsh, monochromatic grey light.
It was high-definition security footage from NICU Room 402, timestamped 2:14 AM.
The seventy guests in the ballroom stood utterly frozen. No one breathed.
On the screen, a figure in a dark trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat crept past the glass window of the NICU door. The woman used a stolen blue badge to swipe the electronic lock. The light turned green. She slipped inside smoothly, closing the heavy door behind her without making a sound.
The camera, positioned directly above the incubator, caught every detail in agonizing clarity.
The woman pulled down her scarf. Eleanor’s face appeared in full, crystal-clear 4K resolution.
A collective groan of horror swept through the country club guests. Courtney’s father-in-law stumbled back against a chair, looking at Eleanor as if she were a venomous snake.
"Turn that off!" Eleanor shrieked, lunging toward the projector cord. "Turn it off right now! It’s a fake! It’s AI! She generated it!"
Kevin stepped in front of her, blocking her with his broad frame, his eyes burning with disgust. "Watch the rest, Eleanor. Everyone needs to see what kind of mother you really are."
On the screen, Eleanor pulled out her leather purse, extracted the cream-colored cardstock, and unlatched the incubator port. The footage clearly showed her sliding her hand inside, tucking the note under baby Rosalie’s tiny, bandaged feet. Then, her hand reached up toward the control panel of the mechanical ventilator.
Her fingers adjusted the dial. A red light began to flash silently on the console screen—the muted warning system.
"Oh my God," Courtney whispered, her face draining of color as she stared at the screen, then at her mother. "Mom... what did you do?"
"I did it for you!" Eleanor suddenly screamed, turning on Courtney with a wild, unhinged look in her eyes. "She was ruining your moment! She always takes the attention away from you! Ever since she got pregnant again, no one was talking about your baby! She needed to be taught a lesson! She needed to learn that her weak, defective child doesn't get to ruin our family’s reputation!"
The room dropped into a sickening, absolute silence.
Even Richard stepped away from his wife, his hands trembling, staring at her as if he had never seen her before in his life. "Eleanor... you tried to... to kill our granddaughter?"
"She wasn't going to die!" Eleanor shouted hysterically, completely losing her mind in front of her high-society peers. "It was just a warning! It was just supposed to make Claire panic and leave the hospital so she’d realize how useless she is!"
Before anyone could say another word, the heavy double doors of the ballroom were slammed open once again.
This time, it wasn't family.
Detective Miller walked in, accompanied by four uniform police officers in bulletproof vests, their cuffs jingling loudly against their belts.
"Eleanor Hayes," Detective Miller announced, her voice booming off the high ceilings. "You are under arrest for attempted murder in the first degree, felony child endangerment, aggravated trespassing, and tampering with medical equipment."
"Get your hands off me!" Eleanor shrieked as two officers grabbed her arms, pinning her against the head table, crushing the delicate pastel flowers and knocking the three-tiered cake onto the floor. "Do you know who I am?! Richard, do something! Courtney, tell them!"
Richard turned his back on her, staring down at the marble floor, completely defeated.
Courtney burst into hysterical tears, backing away as her mother was wrestled to the floor. Her mother-in-law immediately pulled Courtney’s husband away from her, whispering fiercely, "We are annulling this marriage. Your family is insane."
As the officers pulled Eleanor to her feet and snapped the heavy metal handcuffs around her wrists, Detective Miller picked up Eleanor’s fallen leather handbag from the floor. She unzipped it, pulled out a spare set of hospital keys and a stolen volunteer badge, and slid them into an evidence pouch.
Eleanor was dragged down the central aisle of the ballroom. She kicked and screamed, her silver chignon unraveling, her lace dress torn and covered in blue cake frosting.
"You ungrateful little brat!" Eleanor spat at me as she passed my table, her eyes bulging with raw madness. "I gave you life! You would be nothing without me! You destroyed this family!"
May you like
I stood straight, my arm securely around Kevin’s waist, looking at her without a single tear in my eyes.
"You didn't give me life, Eleanor," I said softly as the officers shoved her through the glass doors toward the waiting police cruisers. "You just gave me a sentence. And today, I’m serving my release."
