Chapter 8 - Dawn at Ironwood Mansion

The sun was just beginning to peek over the jagged skyline of downtown Chicago as the black armored Mercedes drove through the iron gates of Ironwood Mansion.
The estate looked different today. The dark, oppressive gloom that had hung over the property for two years had vanished, replaced by the warm, golden light of a new morning.
When the car stopped in front of the grand staircase, the front doors swung open immediately.
Marnie stood on the porch, cradling a small bundle wrapped in a pink blanket. As Lydia stepped out of the car, her legs trembling slightly from exhaustion and trauma, she froze when she saw the blanket in Marnie's arms.
Marnie walked down the steps slowly, her eyes shining with tears, and gently transferred the baby into Lydia's arms.
Lydia clutched her daughter to her chest, burying her face against the baby’s soft head as broken, joyful sobs escaped her lips. The baby stirred, letting out a soft, sleepy yawn before blinking those wide, grey winter-river eyes up at her mother.
"My baby... my sweet Hope," Lydia whispered, kissing the infant's forehead over and over again.
Gideon stood beside them, wrapping one arm around Lydia’s waist and the other gently over his daughter's back. For the first time in his life, the feared mafia boss didn't feel like a ruler sitting on a throne of skulls.

He felt like a man who had finally come home from a war he didn't think he could win.
They walked up the grand staircase together, leaving the dark past behind them. The east wing doors, locked for two years, stood wide open, inviting the morning light into every corner of the house.
