Part 3 – The Secret Behind the Crash

The burglary failed.
Officer Jackson had anticipated it.
The evidence room had already been emptied.
Whoever broke in found nothing except empty shelves and silent alarms.
The police arrested the intruder before sunrise.
His name was Victor Hale.
The same man from Daniel's surveillance photos.
The same man Marissa had handed the envelope to.
Victor wasn't just a hired criminal.
He was a former insurance investigator who specialized in fraud.
After sixteen hours of questioning, he finally spoke.
"I wasn't hired to kill anyone."
The room fell silent.
"I was hired to fake a death."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Whose?"
Victor looked directly at me.
"Yours."
The real plan slowly unfolded.
Marissa and Julian had secretly copied my company records for months.
They intended to transfer millions through shell companies overseas.
Once the money disappeared, my death would explain everything.
A burned body inside my Camaro.
A staged accident.
Insurance payouts.
Corporate fraud blamed on a dead owner.
Julian would become acting CEO.
Marissa would quietly disappear overseas under a new identity.
No one would ever connect them.
Except...
Marissa changed her mind.
Victor admitted that two nights before the crash she demanded to cancel everything.
She wanted to confess.
She wanted a divorce instead.
Julian refused.
They argued violently.
Hours later...
Marissa's SUV plunged off a bridge.
The crash everyone called an accident.
It wasn't.
Detectives recovered new forensic evidence from the vehicle.
Brake lines had been deliberately damaged.
Someone wanted the crash to happen.
Julian was arrested that afternoon.
He denied everything.
Until Daniel produced one final piece of evidence.
The dashboard camera from Victor's truck.
It showed Julian following Marissa minutes before the crash.
His silence lasted exactly eleven seconds.
Then he asked for a lawyer.
But there was still one mystery.
Why had Marissa replaced herself with the mannequin before leaving?
The answer arrived inside a sealed envelope addressed to me.
Her handwriting.
Shaking.
Uneven.
"I don't know if I'll make it back.
If you're reading this, I waited too long to become honest.
I betrayed you.
I was weak.
But when I realized Julian planned to destroy your life, I couldn't let him finish.
The mannequin was never meant to fool you forever.
Only long enough to keep Julian believing you were still unaware.
I'm sorry."
For the first time since the nightmare began...
I cried.
Not because she had lied.
May you like
But because she had finally tried to tell the truth.
Too late.
