Chapter 10 - Home at Last

Two weeks later, the autumn sunlight streamed through the bay windows of our newly renovated home, casting a warm, golden glow across the hardwood floor.
The nightmare at the docks felt like a lifetime ago. The federal task force had used the digital evidence from Sarah’s vault to dismantle the international syndicate once and for all, ensuring our family would never be threatened by shadows from the past again.
In the living room, Ethan and Emma were sitting on the plush rug, building an impossibly tall tower out of wooden blocks while cartoon music played softly on the television.
“Watch out, Em, it’s gonna fall!” Ethan laughed, catching the leaning tower just before it toppled over.
Emma giggled, clapping her hands.
From the kitchen, the rich, comforting aroma of roasted garlic and rosemary filled the air. I stood by the stove, stirring a pot of pasta sauce, listening to the sound of my children laughing without a trace of fear in their voices.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a pair of slender arms wrapped gently around my waist. Sarah rested her head against my back, letting out a contented sigh.
I turned off the burner, turned around, and wrapped my arms securely around her, resting my chin on top of her head. Her bruises had faded, and the heavy burden that had weighed on her shoulders for five agonizing years was finally gone.
“Dinner is almost ready, Mrs. Miller,” I murmured, smiling down at her.
Sarah looked up, her green eyes sparkling with a happiness I hadn't seen in a decade. “Good. Because those two little monsters have bottomless stomachs ever since we got home from the hospital.”
“Well,” I said, pressing a soft kiss to her lips, “their dad is going to make sure they never have to worry about running out of anything ever again. Especially not time.”

Sarah smiled, leaning into my embrace. “We’re really going to be okay, aren't we?”
“We are,” I whispered, looking past her toward the living room where our children were playing together in the warmth and safety of a home built on truth, forgiveness, and unconditional love. “We’re home.”
