Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Five years later, the spring air carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine across the courtyard of the downtown legal aid center that now bore my name: The Vance Foundation for Justice.
I stood on the balcony of my second-floor office, looking down at the sunlit plaza where dozens of families walked freely, laughing and talking without fear. Inside my office, the walls were lined with framed certificates, thank-you letters from hundreds of women who had reclaimed their lives, and a single, small framed photograph of a glowing kitchen counter and a hidden magnetic switch.
My phone rang on the mahogany desk. I walked inside, picked up the receiver, and answered with a warm, steady voice.
“Vance Foundation, this is Clara. How can I help you?”
“Hi, Clara,” a familiar voice answered on the other end—Marisol, now a captain in the police department, calling to coordinate our annual charity gala. “Are you ready for tonight? The keynote speech is all on you.”
“I’m ready, Marisol,” I said, looking out the large window at the glittering city skyline. “I’ve been preparing for this speech my entire life.”
“How’s the hand?” Marisol asked gently, knowing the anniversary of that night always carried a quiet significance.
I looked down at my right hand. The skin was smooth, the scar barely visible unless the light hit it just right.
“It healed completely,” I said, smiling softly. “And it holds a pen much better than a stove coil.”

After hanging up, I walked over to the window and took a deep, steady breath. The past was behind me, locked away in court records and prison cells. Ahead of me lay an endless horizon of possibilities, justice, and absolute freedom.
I had survived the fire, and from its ashes, I had built an empire of light. And lived happily, fiercely, and completely on my own terms.
