Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

Andrew did not go down quietly. Desperate men with everything to lose rarely do.

Two days after Martha’s arrest, Andrew attempted to freeze my corporate bank accounts by presenting a fraudulent spousal affidavit to my bank branch manager, claiming I was mentally incapacitated and unfit to handle financial decisions.

Fortunately, Eleanor had already flagged my accounts with legal injunctions. The bank manager called Eleanor immediately, and Andrew was escorted out of the building by security guards under threat of trespass charges.

Realizing he couldn't break my finances, Andrew turned to social media and family pressure.

My phone was inundated with calls from Andrew’s extended family members—uncles, aunts, and cousins who had never spoken to me unless they needed free skincare products or financial favors.

"How could you do this to your mother-in-law?" Andrew’s aunt, Brenda, shrieked into a voicemail. "She is an old woman! You put her in a jail cell over a small discipline matter! You're destroying a family!"

I didn't argue. I simply sent Brenda a link to the video of Martha striking Sophie, followed by a copy of the police report.

Brenda never called back. Neither did anyone else from his family.

On Thursday, Andrew showed up at my skincare manufacturing warehouse on the outskirts of the city. He looked disheveled, his suit wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot. He didn't look like the confident, smooth-talking corporate consultant I had married. He looked like a man unraveling.

My head of warehouse operations, Marcus, blocked the entrance before Andrew could step inside.

"Clara!" Andrew screamed past Marcus’s broad shoulders, his voice echoing in the concrete loading dock. "Clara, please! Talk to me! You're taking this too far! My mother is in a county lockup! She can't handle jail!"

I walked out to the threshold, standing safely behind Marcus and the security barrier.

"You brought this on yourself, Andrew," I said coldly.

"It was a mistake!" Andrew pleaded, taking a step forward until Marcus raised a hand. "My mother has old-fashioned ideas about discipline! She didn't mean to hurt Sophie! And about Ethan—I was going to tell you! I was just waiting for the right time!"

"The right time?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Ethan is seven years old, Andrew. You lied to me for seven years. You let me pay for your son's private school while telling me we couldn't afford to save for Sophie's college fund! You let your mother abuse my daughter in the home I paid for!"

"I love you, Clara!" he yelled, tears welling in his eyes. "We're a family! You can't just throw away six years of marriage!"

"You threw it away the moment you decided I was a cash cow to be milked for your secret life," I replied. "You have five seconds to leave before the security team calls the police for violating the restraining order."

"You're a heartless bitch!" Andrew roared, his face twisting into an ugly mask of rage. "You think you're so smart with your little soap company? I made you! Without me, you're nothing! I'm going to take half of everything you own, and you'll never see Sophie again!"

"Try it," I said quietly, turning my back on him and walking back into the facility.

Behind me, the heavy metal door clicked shut, sealing out his shouts.

That evening, Eleanor received a formal motion from Andrew’s legal team. They were suing for full legal custody of Sophie, claiming I was an abusive, unstable mother who had physically assaulted Martha and kidnapped our daughter. They were also demanding $15,000 a month in temporary spousal support and full ownership of my business.

Eleanor reviewed the documents over a video call, a calm, victorious smile on her face.

"They're playing right into our hands," Eleanor said. "They don't realize we have the complete bank records from his offshore accounts and the full audio transcript. We aren't just going to defend against this motion, Clara. We're going to crush them in court."
