Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

By early spring of the following year, the legal proceedings back in Texas reached their inevitable conclusion.
I received a secure digital link to the federal courtroom livestream in Dallas while sitting in my Frankfurt office late one evening. The courtroom was packed with financial reporters, legal analysts, and federal investigators.
Grant Whitmore sat at the defense table. He looked older, gaunt, and completely defeated. The expensive tailored suits were gone, replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit. His expensive lawyers had long since abandoned him when his remaining funds dried up, leaving him represented by a weary public defender who looked ready for the trial to end just as much as the prosecutors did.
The federal judge, a stern woman with decades on the bench, adjusted her glasses before delivering the final sentence.
“Mr. Whitmore,” the judge’s voice echoed clearly through the courtroom speakers. “You systematically abused corporate trust, engineered complex international fraud schemes, forged official legal documents, and exploited your position for personal greed on a massive scale. The court finds no mitigating circumstances.”
She paused, striking her gavel once with definitive force.
“I sentence you to fourteen years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets are hereby forfeited to satisfy restitution orders.”
I watched the screen as federal marshals stepped forward, placing handcuffs on Grant and leading him out of the courtroom. He didn't look at the cameras. He didn't look at the gallery. For a brief second, his eyes scanned the empty space as if searching for someone to save him—someone he had betrayed, discarded, and thrown out into the rain.
There was no one there.
I closed the laptop lid, cutting off the livestream feed.

I stood up, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window of my office, and looked out over the sparkling lights of Frankfurt stretching out into the European night.
The nightmare was officially over. The man who had tried to destroy me was locked away behind bars, paying the exact price for his own deceit. And I was standing at the pinnacle of my own strength, untouchable, resilient, and completely free.
