Part 10: A New Dawn

Marcus walked over, handing me a cold glass of sweet tea, and wrapped his free arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. We stood together in the golden light of the setting sun, watching our daughter run free.

“You know,” Marcus said softly, resting his chin on my shoulder, “we make a pretty incredible team.”

I smiled, leaning back into his strength, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into my bones for the first time in my life. The nightmare of that summer barbecue was behind us, buried under the weight of justice and the fierce, protective love we shared as parents.

“We do,” I agreed, taking a sip of the sweet tea. “We really do.”

Ava ran over to us then, her face flushed with excitement, holding up a stick she had found for the puppy. She looked up at us with bright, sparkling eyes, completely safe, completely loved, and completely free.

The past was gone. The future was ours. And our happily ever after had finally begun.
