Chapter 10 - Fifteen Years Later

Ten years later, the Moretti estate in Maine was no longer just a retreat; it was a home overflowing with life, warmth, and the boisterous energy of three growing boys who were now strong, confident teenagers.
On a bright Sunday afternoon in June, the wooden deck overlooking the lake was set with long tables covered in white linens, flowers, and celebratory banners. Today marked a double milestone: Gabriel and Isabella’s fifteenth wedding anniversary, and Leo’s high school graduation.
Gabriel stood near the edge of the water, dressed in a crisp white linen shirt and slacks, watching his three sons skip flat stones across the glittering surface of the lake. Leo, now towering over his mother and looking strikingly like a younger version of Gabriel, was teaching Liam how to get the stone to skip four times, while Lucas argued playfully about the aerodynamics of slate.
Behind him, soft footsteps approached.
Isabella stepped onto the grass, wearing a flowing summer sundress, her hair tied back with a familiar red ribbon. She walked up beside Gabriel, slipping her hand into his. Her fingers fit against his palm with the absolute, effortless perfection of a puzzle piece completed long ago.
Gabriel squeezed her hand, looking out over the sparkling water and then back toward the house where their sons were laughing together.
“Look at them,” Gabriel murmured, pride warming his deep voice. “They don't know anything about iron cages or shadows. They only know what it means to be safe.”
Isabella rested her head against his shoulder, her dark eyes shining with quiet emotion. “Because you had the courage to let someone break the rules, Gabriel. You let love in.”
Gabriel turned, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close, looking down into the eyes of the woman who had defied death, infiltrated her own home, and kept a dying promise to heal a broken family.

“Always,” Gabriel whispered against her lips.
As the boys ran toward them shouting about cake and celebration, Gabriel kissed his wife under the warm summer sun—surrounded by laughter, anchored by family, and finally, completely at peace.
