Chapter 4 - The Fracture of Illusion

The heavy metal door of my apartment buzzed open remotely, courtesy of the building manager who had overridden the system at Detective Cole's urgent request. Within seconds, heavy footsteps echoed down the carpeted hallway, followed by frantic, desperate pounding on my door.
“Claire! Claire, please open up! I know you’re in there!” Vanessa’s voice cracked, raw and jagged, stripped of all its haughty composure. “The police are insane! They’re saying horrible things, and Derek won't even look at me in the interrogation room! You have to fix this!”
Detective Cole positioned herself smoothly beside the door, her badge gleaming faintly in the dim light of the entryway. With a sharp, practiced motion, she unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door wide open.
Vanessa stumbled forward into the foyer, her hands raised in supplication, ready to grab my shoulders. She froze dead in her tracks when she saw Cole’s stern, unyielding face blocking her path.
“Vanessa Vance?” Detective Cole asked, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
Vanessa recoiled as if she had touched a live wire, her wide, panicked eyes darting from the badge to my face. “Claire... tell her to make this stop. Please. You’re my sister. You can’t let them do this to me. It was supposed to be a joke! Derek was just trying to be funny, and things got out of hand, and now the lawyers are saying—saying conspiracy charges—”
“Vanessa,” I said, stepping out from the kitchen counter. My voice was steady, surprising even myself. The tremor in my hands had vanished, replaced by a cold, crystalline clarity. “You texted Derek to make sure I stood on his left so he could get a 'clean shot.' You knew there were metal shavings inside that barrel. You watched me bleed onto the hotel floor, and your very first thought was that my blood was ruining your photo layout.”
Vanessa’s face drained of what little color it had left. Her mouth opened and closed soundlessly, like a fish gasping for air. The practiced tears vanished, replaced by a flash of desperate, cornered fury.
“You ruin everything!” she shrieked, lunging forward despite Detective Cole's warning hand. “You always have! You think you’re so much smarter, so much holier than everyone else! Mom and Dad always catered to your little artistic dreams while I had to claw my way to keep up appearances! I worked so hard for that wedding, and you couldn't even stand there and take a little joke without playing the victim!”
“A joke?” Detective Cole intervened sharply, stepping forward and firmly placing her hand on Vanessa’s shoulder, guiding her back out into the hallway. “Ms. Vance, stepping across a court-ordered boundary line while screaming admissions of guilt into a hallway equipped with twenty-four-hour surveillance audio is not a very smart legal strategy. You are under arrest for felony violation of a protective order. Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
“No! No, you can’t do this! Claire, tell her!” Vanessa wailed as the cold click of steel handcuffs echoed down the corridor. Her legs gave out, and for a terrifying second, she crumpled against the wall, weeping hysterically not out of remorse, but out of pure, unadulterated self-preservation.

As Detective Cole escorted her away toward the elevator, Vanessa cast one final look over her shoulder. It was a look of pure, venomous hatred—the exact same look she had given me on the hotel floor when I dared to cover my bleeding eye.
I closed the door, locked every single deadbolt, and leaned back against the wood. My heart was pounding, but inside my chest, a profound sense of liberation began to bloom. The illusion of our family bond was shattered beyond repair, and for the first time in my life, I felt entirely free of its suffocating weight.
