Chapter 10 - The Real Family

Leo bolted across the grass, his laughter mingling with the bright, cheerful shouts of the other children. Watching him seamlessly integrate into the group—welcomed instantly, without hesitation, condition, or prejudice—I felt a quiet wave of emotion wash over me.
My phone buzzed gently in my jacket pocket. I pulled it out to find a photo message from my sister. It was a picture of her, Toby, and Aunt Clara baking cookies in her kitchen, all of them smiling brightly under a dusting of flour. The caption simply read: Sunday prep crew. See you at noon!
I smiled, typing back a quick reply before sliding the phone away.
The wind rustled through the blooming cherry blossoms above my head, carrying a shower of soft pink petals down onto the wooden picnic table and the grass around me. Life hadn't handed us an easy path. It had tested us with cruelty, forced us to shatter toxic bonds, and required us to rebuild our entire world from the ground up. But in doing so, it had given us something far more valuable than inherited estates or superficial social status: it had given us authenticity, freedom, and an unbreakable love that nothing in this world could ever diminish.
Across the field, Leo scored a goal. The other kids cheered wildly, lifting him up on their shoulders in celebration. Leo looked over across the park straight at me, his face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy, and waved frantically.
