Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

Marcus collapsed against the edge of the desk, his knees giving out beneath him. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost rise from the grave.

“Adrian… please,” Marcus whimpered, his hands raised in surrender. “I was forced into it! The Valenti family… they threatened me! They made me put the bomb in your car!”

Adrian walked slowly toward Marcus. Each step was measured, deliberate, and heavy with three years of accumulated vengeance.

He reached out, grabbed Marcus by the collar of his expensive suit, and lifted him off the floor with one arm, slamming him against the stone fireplace.

“Don’t lie to me, Marcus,” Adrian whispered softly into his ear. “Thomas Carter kept a second set of books. I know about the Swiss accounts. I know about the offshore trusts. And I know you ordered the bomb three days before the Valenti family even knew I was taking Saturday off.”

Marcus’s eyes opened wide with absolute horror. He realized there was no escape, no story left to tell.

“Why?” Adrian asked, his voice cracking slightly as the faces of Claire and Sophie flashed in his mind. “I gave you everything. I trusted you with my life. My family welcomed you into our home.”

“You were getting soft!” Marcus spat, his fear turning into bitter venom as he realized his life was over. “You were talking about retiring! You were going to leave the empire to your legitimate businesses and walk away! What about me? What about the years I spent building this network? You were going to throw it all away for a woman and a brat who wanted to feed ducks!”

SLO-MO IMPACT.

Adrian’s fist struck Marcus across the face, breaking his jaw instantly and sending him crashing across the coffee table, shattering the glass top into a thousand pieces.

Marcus lay bleeding on the floor, groaning in pain.

Adrian stood over him, breathing heavily. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, dark steel pistol. He racked the slide, chambering a round, and pointed the barrel directly at the center of Marcus’s forehead.

Dr. Vance was sobbing on the floor, clutching his impaled hand, pleading for mercy.

The room fell dead silent, save for the crackling of the fire and the howling of the wind outside.

Dominic Rossi stepped forward, his hand resting on his own weapon. “Boss… the federal agents and NYPD are waiting at the front gate. If you shoot him now, it gets complicated.”

Adrian’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Everything inside him screamed to execute the man who had murdered his wife and daughter. It would take less than a pound of pressure to end Marcus Vale’s pathetic life right here on the carpet.

Then, from the corner of the room, a tiny voice broke through the storm in his mind.

“Daddy?”

Adrian froze.

He turned his head slightly.

Lily was standing beside the sofa. She wasn't crying, nor was she afraid of the gun or the blood. She was simply looking at him with those wide, trusting hazel eyes, holding her ragged stuffed rabbit by its torn ear.

“Two cherries,” Lily whispered softly, repeating the phrase she had heard Adrian mutter in his sleep during his feverish nights. “Good things go last.”

Adrian stared at the little girl.

He remembered his promise to Sophie on that bright October afternoon three years ago—a promise to be a father, a good man, someone worthy of his family’s love. If he executed Marcus in cold blood in front of this innocent child, Marcus would win. Marcus would turn Adrian into a heartless monster, destroying the second chance at life that Lily had fought so hard to give him.

Slowly, Adrian lowered the gun.

He engaged the safety and handed the weapon to Dominic.

“Take them,” Adrian said coldly. “Give the federals the ledgers, the poison samples, and the recorded confessions. Make sure Marcus and Vance spend every remaining second of their lives in a federal supermax facility.”

May you like

Dominic smiled—a genuine, proud smile. “With pleasure, boss.”

As the tactical team dragged the screaming, weeping forms of Marcus Vale and Dr. Vance out into the snowy night, Adrian turned away. He did not look back.
