Chapter 6 - Justice in the Shadows

The syndicate capos stared down at Vincent in utter disgust. In the criminal underworld, betrayal of the family was the ultimate sin—a crime punished swiftly and without mercy.
"Take him to the warehouse on 4th Street," Lorenzo commanded quietly, his eyes devoid of any emotion. "Let Viktor Vance know that his new partner is currently unemployed. We will handle this according to family law."
Marcus and Anthony hauled Vincent to his feet. As they dragged him toward the private elevator, Vincent screamed curses and threats, but the doors slid shut, cutting off his voice entirely.
Lorenzo turned to face the remaining capos. The tension in the room was palpable. Every man at the table sat frozen, waiting to see who would survive the purge.
"The business continues," Lorenzo said evenly. "Our territories remain secure. But let this serve as a permanent reminder: loyalty is not bought with a paycheck. It is earned through honor."
Paulie Marino bowed his head respectfully. "Understood, Boss. The family is yours."
One by one, the capos stood up and filed out of the room, leaving Lorenzo alone with Marcus and Daniel. The coup had been crushed in a single evening, not through a bloody war, but through absolute truth and tactical precision.

Yet, as Lorenzo looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering Manhattan skyline, his thoughts drifted far away from the syndicate, the money, and the power.
He thought of a little girl in a pink sock and one bare foot, holding a pair of broken rabbit scissors in a dark cellar.
