The sun dipped low over the horizon of the Maine coast, casting a warm, golden glow across the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

Five years had passed since I walked out of that Greenwich backyard.

Vance Engineering Solutions was now recognized across the Northeast as one of the premier structural and sustainable design firms in the country. Our work on the Portland Harbor Restoration Project had won several national architectural awards, and my name was proudly featured on our corporate headquarters—not as someone's wife, or someone's assistant, but as founder, CEO, and lead visionary.

My life was full, peaceful, and rich with genuine connection. I had surrounded myself with brilliant colleagues, loyal friends, and a community of people who valued kindness, intelligence, and mutual respect above social status or pedigree.

On a warm summer evening, I stood on the deck of my expanded Rockport home, watching the sun paint the sky in vibrant shades of amber, violet, and rose.

Julian and his family were inside, laughing as they prepared dinner in the open-kitchen dining room. The sound of cheerful voices and clinking silverware drifted out through the sliding glass doors, warm and welcoming.

I rested my hands on the smooth wooden railing, looking out over the endless expanse of the ocean.

My thoughts drifted back, momentarily, to that afternoon in Evelyn’s backyard—to the flimsy paper plate, the cruel laughter, the silence of a man who wouldn't defend me, and the cold ultimatum that changed my life forever.
