Chapter 3 - The Empty Bank Accounts

Panic quickly turned into financial terror inside the Bennett household. Within twenty minutes of Megan's screaming fit, David had grabbed his laptop, frantically tapping at the keyboard in a desperate attempt to salvage their dream holiday.

"Let me check the portal," David muttered, sweat beading on his forehead. "Maybe Rachel was just throwing a tantrum. Maybe she threatened to cancel but didn't actually follow through. People don't just throw away thirty thousand dollars on a whim."

He logged into the shared booking dashboard that Rachel had always managed. The screen flashed red. A stark, unyielding notification stared back at him: RESERVATION CANCELED BY ACCOUNT OWNER. NO REFUND TO THIRD-PARTY USERS.

"It's real," David whispered, his face draining of all color. "Every single booking is gone. The chalet in Aspen is rented out to someone else. The first-class flights are wiped from the manifest."

Megan dropped into the chair next to her mother, her phone clutched in a white-knuckled grip. "Call her. Call her right now, David. Make her fix this."

"I've called her four times," David replied bitterly, slamming his laptop shut. "Straight to voicemail. She blocked my number. And yours too, Megan. Look at your phone."

Megan frantically tapped her screen, pressing dial on Rachel's cell. Beep. Beep. Beep. The call was instantly rejected, diverted to an automated message stating that the subscriber was unavailable.

Clara finally found her voice, though it was weak and trembling with indignation. "How dare she? How dare Rachel treat her own flesh and blood this way over an adopted child? That little girl isn't even hers by blood! I was just telling her the truth, preparing her for the real world!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Megan snapped, her usual deference to her mother completely vanished in the face of financial ruin. "Just shut up! Your stupid mouth is the reason we are sitting here in a cold, boring house while everyone else is hitting the slopes in Colorado! You couldn't keep your bitter opinions to yourself for one more day?!"

"Me?" Clara gasped, clutching her pearls. "You benefited from her money just as much as I did, Megan! You didn't complain when she bought you that designer winter coat last year!"

"At least I didn't insult her kid to her face!" Megan wailed, burying her face in her hands as her two children walked into the kitchen, fully dressed in their winter gear, holding their snowboards and looking expectantly at their parents.

"Mom, Dad, when are we leaving for the airport?" their oldest son asked, grinning. "Uncle David said we're renting snowmobiles today!"

Megan looked up at her children, her heart breaking not out of maternal love for them at that exact second, but out of sheer embarrassment and dread. She had bragged to all her friends at the country club about the luxury Aspen trip. She had posted countdowns on her social media.

"Kids," Megan choked out, her voice breaking. "Unpack your bags. Christmas is canceled."

As the children began to cry, David realized something even more terrifying. He opened his own mobile banking app and checked their checking account balance. The numbers stared back at him like a bad joke: $412.35.

Because they had relied entirely on Rachel's yearly holiday funding, Megan and David had spent every cent of their own modest savings on expensive holiday outfits, luxury ski gear, and gifts to match the high-end standards Rachel's trips always demanded. They didn't even have enough money to buy groceries for Christmas dinner, let alone salvage a last-minute trip.
