Chapter 9 - The Bright Tomorrow

Two years after that terrible night, our new life had taken firm root.
Our home was a charming two-story craftsman house on a quiet, tree-lined street. The backyard had a plush green lawn, a wooden patio, and yes—a big tire swing hanging from a massive oak tree, just as Lucas had promised.
I had used my years of management experience from the hardware store to start my own interior design and home staging business. With Lucas handling the legal structuring and financial management, the business thrived, giving me complete independence and the flexibility to spend every afternoon with Maisie.
Maisie was now four years old—a vibrant, happy, talkative child with wide brown eyes and a laugh that could light up any room. She remembered nothing of the cold alley or the yellow blanket in the dumpster. To her, the world was a safe, warm place filled with books, finger painting, and outdoor adventures with her daddy.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in June, our backyard was decorated with white fairy lights, fresh summer flowers, and tables filled with delicious food.
It was our wedding day.
We had decided against a grand, stressful ceremony. Instead, we held an intimate backyard wedding surrounded only by people who truly loved and supported us: Lucas's parents, a few close friends, my business partners, and Tessa and Sadie.
I stood inside the master bedroom, adjusting the lace sleeves of my simple, elegant white wedding dress in the mirror.
A light knock came at the door, and Lucas stepped inside. He looked impossibly handsome in his tailored charcoal suit, holding a small wooden box in his hand.
"You look breathtaking, Clara," he whispered, stepping up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Vance," I smiled, leaning back against his chest.
"I have something for you before we go downstairs," Lucas said, opening the wooden box. Inside lay a delicate gold necklace with two interlocking rings—one holding a tiny diamond, and the other holding a small sapphire, Maisie's birthstone.
"It represents us," Lucas said gently, clasping the chain around my neck. "Past, present, and the family we built together out of love."
I touched the smooth gold pendant, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over me. "I love you, Lucas. Thank you for saving us."

"You saved yourself, Clara," Lucas replied softly, turning me around to face him. "You had the courage to walk away from darkness and choose light."
Downstairs, acoustic guitar music began to play in the yard.
