Part 2: The Silent Alliance

Carmen stood frozen, her eyes darting toward the hallway as if afraid the walls themselves might report them.
“This is dangerous… if your husband finds out—”
“He won’t,” Lucía interrupted calmly, her voice steady despite the IV line in her arm. “Because he believes I’m already halfway to the grave.”
Lucía slowly explained everything she had suspected for months—hidden transfers, falsified signatures, the quiet dismantling of her assets while she had been weakened by illness she now suspected was not entirely natural.
Carmen hesitated. “You’re saying he may have… helped this illness progress?”
“I’m saying,” Lucía replied, her gaze sharpening, “that I want proof before I accuse him of anything.”
From that moment, Carmen became more than a nurse. She became Lucía’s eyes outside the hospital room.
Over the next two days, Alejandro performed his role flawlessly. He brought flowers, spoke to doctors with false desperation, and even arranged a private consultation for “end-of-life comfort decisions.”
But every move he made was quietly recorded.
Carmen documented conversations. A sympathetic night-shift orderly—recruited carefully—helped access hospital logs. And Lucía, despite her frailty, began secretly refusing certain medications under the guidance of a trusted doctor Carmen had brought in under the pretense of a second opinion.
Slowly, clarity returned to Lucía’s mind.
And with it, the truth: she was not dying as fast as they had claimed.
On the third night, Alejandro arrived earlier than usual. His expression was different—less grief, more impatience.
“They say tomorrow will be the last day,” he whispered, stroking her hand. “Everything will finally be settled.”
Lucía closed her eyes.

But this time, she was not listening as a victim.
She was counting down the final steps of his mistake.
