Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the morning sun rose over the city, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the skyline of St. Jude Memorial.
The hospital was different now. The corrupt administrators and compromised physicians were long gone, replaced by a new leadership team dedicated to patient care rather than backroom syndicate politics.
On the fourth floor, in the newly renovated neonatal suite, a healthy, chubby-cheeked baby boy was gurgling happily in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling with strong, steady breaths.
Sofia Moretti sat beside the crib, laughing softly as she tickled her son's toes, her health fully restored and her eyes bright with joy.
Down the hall, in the newly established Director of Pediatric Nursing office, I pinned my brand-new gold badge to my pristine white lab coat. Through the glass window, I could see the nursing staff moving efficiently, patients smiling, and the entire floor running like a finely tuned machine.
A soft knock echoed at my open office door.
I turned. Dominic Moretti stood in the doorway. He wasn't wearing a tactical vest or holding a gun. He wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, and in his arms, he carried a smiling, bright-eyed Leonardo, who was reaching out toward me with tiny, grasping hands.
Dominic walked into the office, a rare, genuine smile softening his sharp features. He handed the baby over to me with practiced ease.
I scooped Leonardo up into my arms, resting the little boy against my shoulder as he let out a happy coo.
"How is my favorite nurse handling her new title?" Dominic asked, leaning casually against my office desk.
