Chapter 4 - The Sudden Violence

The plastic cups flew into the air, splashing lemonade across the grass.
Marissa didn’t aim for my face or my hair; with a terrifying instinct born of pure malice, her hands clawed directly outward toward my stomach.
“You think you’re so perfect!” she shrieked, her fingers inches from my linen dress.
Time seemed to fracture, stretching into slow motion. I saw the look of raw hatred in my sister's eyes—eyes that had shared a childhood bedroom with me, eyes that had once looked to me for protection when we were little.
Before her hands could connect with my body, Preston moved with breathtaking, explosive speed.
Years of physical training and the hyper-vigilance of a man protecting his unborn child converged in a single second. He lunged sideways, intercepting Marissa mid-air. His shoulder slammed into her torso, knocking her off course just as her fingernails grazed my ribs, tearing the fabric of my dress.
Marissa stumbled hard, crashing backward into the folding table and sending aluminum plates, potato salad, and soda cans scattering across the grass.
Kyle roared, stepping forward and shoving Preston hard in the chest. “Don't you put your hands on her, you bastard!”
Preston didn't swing back. With the practiced discipline of a federal officer who had dealt with dangerous defendants, he caught Kyle’s wrists with iron grips, twisting him downward and pinning his arms behind his back in a defensive submission hold, neutralizing the threat in less than three seconds without a single punch thrown.
“Back off!” Preston commanded, his voice cold, hard, and echoing across the entire neighborhood. “She is pregnant! Do you understand what she just tried to do?”
My mother burst into tears, covering her mouth with her hands. “Stop it! Oh God, stop it!”
My father scrambled out of his chair, grabbing Kyle’s shoulder. “Kyle, get out! Get out of my yard right now, or I swear to God I’ll call the police myself!”
Marissa scrambled to her feet on the grass, her hair tangled, her face twisted in an ugly mask of rage and humiliation. She didn't look remorseful; she looked like a cornered animal. She pointed a shaking finger at me, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“You stole my life!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. “You stole everything that was supposed to be mine! I hope you lose it! I hope you lose the baby!”
The words hung in the warm Denver air like a physical blow.
Silence fell over the backyard, heavier and more suffocating than before. Even Kyle stopped struggling against Preston’s grip, looking at Marissa with a sudden flicker of shock at what she had just said.
I stood there, frozen, my hands resting instinctively over my stomach. Inside me, the baby gave one violent, terrifying kick, as if she too had heard the curse hurled at her existence.
A sharp, cramping pain bloomed instantly in my lower abdomen.

The color drained from my face. I gasped, grabbing the edge of the surviving table for support as my knees buckled.
“Sarah?” Preston released Kyle instantly, dropping to his knees beside me with a look of absolute terror in his eyes. “Sarah, what is it? What’s wrong?”
