Chapter 10 - Light Through the Window

The story comes to its close on a warm summer evening on the back porch of their coastal cottage.

The sky above the ocean was painted in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and deep violet. The sound of waves crashing gently against the shore filled the quiet air.

Laura sat in a wooden rocking chair, drinking a warm cup of tea—sweetened with real honey, made by her own hands in her bright, safe kitchen.

A few feet away on the lawn, Ethan was running with a golden retriever puppy named Leo, which Laura had surprised him with for his eleventh birthday. The puppy chased a blue tennis ball across the green grass, barking joyfully as Ethan threw it again and again.

Dr. Bennett and Rachel were sitting on the porch steps, laughing and chatting as they watched Ethan play.

"Look at him," Rachel said softly to Laura, smiling. "He’s so happy, Laura. He’s just a kid again."

"He got his childhood back," Laura said, setting her teacup down on the small table. "That's all I ever wanted."

Dr. Bennett turned around on the steps, looking at Laura with a gentle smile. "How are you feeling, Laura? Any lingering symptoms?"

"None," Laura said honestly, placing a hand over her chest, feeling the strong, steady, rhythmic beat of her heart beneath her palm. "My heart is completely whole."

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a long golden pathway across the water, Ethan ran up the porch steps, out of breath, his cheeks red from playing. Leo trotted right behind him, tongue flopping happily out of his mouth.

Ethan sat down on the porch swing beside his mother, leaning his head against her arm.

Laura wrapped her arm around his shoulders, pulling him close. She picked up a small wooden framed picture resting on the side table—the drawing Ethan had made of their cottage, signed with her real signature and the little heart at the end.

"You know, Ethan," Laura whispered into his hair as the first stars began to twinkle in the evening sky. "Every time I write my name for the rest of my life, I'm going to think of you."

Ethan looked up at her, his dark eyes shining in the twilight. "Why, Mom?"

Laura smiled, kissing the top of his head.

"Because that little heart at the end of my name isn't just a letter," she said softly. "It's the reason I'm still here."

Ethan smiled, holding her hand tightly as the stars filled the sky above them, completely safe, completely loved, and finally home
