Part 2: The Vault of Secrets

The second tap against my pacemaker sent a coded signal through a system almost nobody knew existed.

Not even Mara.

Not even Daniel.

Certainly not the police officers they had bribed.

My father had built the family fortune on paranoia long before he built it on money. Every trust account, every vault, every offshore reserve had emergency protocols hidden beneath layers of legal protection.

Protocols that activated only if I did.

Above me, I heard faint metallic echoes.

The vault locks were engaging.

For the first time that night, I allowed myself to breathe.

Mara thought she had trapped me underground.

She had no idea she had trapped herself inside the estate.

A contraction hit.

Hard.

I clenched my teeth.

The baby was coming.

Not now, I begged silently. Just give me a little more time.

My wrist monitor flashed red.

Body temperature dropping.

Heart rate unstable.

I forced myself upright and crawled toward the far wall.

Years ago, my father had shown me every hidden mechanism in the property.

“Trust is wonderful,” he had told me.

“Backups are better.”

My fingers found a loose brick.

I pulled.

A concealed compartment opened.

Inside sat an emergency satellite phone.

Thank God.

My shaking hands dialed a single number.

The line connected immediately.

“Elise?”

I nearly cried when I heard the voice.

“Victor.”

Victor Hale had served as my father's chief of security for twenty years.

Everyone believed he retired after my father died.

That was another lie.

“I'm in the north cellar,” I whispered.

A pause.

Then his voice hardened.

“Stay alive. We're coming.”

Above me, chaos erupted.

A woman's scream echoed through the house.

Mara.

I smiled.

The dye packs.

Every bundle of stolen cash hidden in her suitcases had just exploded.

Red ink spread across millions of dollars.

Evidence impossible to hide.

Then came another sound.

The vault security doors.

Sealing.

Heavy steel barriers dropped throughout the estate.

No one entered.

No one left.

Not without authorization.

And Mara no longer had it.

I heard pounding overhead.

Shouting.

Daniel's voice.

“What did you do?”

Mara screamed back.

“I didn't do anything!”

For the first time all night, fear entered her voice.

Real fear.

Another contraction hit.

This one stole my breath.

Warm liquid spread beneath me.

My water had broken.

The baby was coming now.

Not later.

Not tomorrow.

Now.

I grabbed the satellite phone.

“Victor.”

“We're five minutes out.”

“It has to be faster.”

Silence.

Then he understood.

“Oh God.”

Above me, alarms blared.

Below me, labor began.

And somewhere between revenge and survival, I realized only one thing mattered anymore.

My child.

Not the money.

Not the betrayal.

Not even Mara.

Just my baby.

I pressed a hand against my stomach.

May you like

“Hold on,” I whispered.

“Mom's still fighting.”
