Chapter 8 - A New Seed

Six months after my encounter with Julian, Audrey took me on a weekend trip to a coastal town two hours outside the city.

We stayed in a small cottage overlooking the ocean. The weather was bright and crisp, the waves crashing softly against the sharp cliffs below. Leo spent the afternoon building sandcastles on the beach, his laughter carrying over the breeze while Audrey helped him dig moats and gather seashells.

Watching the two of them together filled me with a warmth I had once believed was impossible for me to feel. Audrey didn't just accept Leo; he loved him fiercely as his own son. He had officially filed adoption papers to become Leo’s legal father earlier that month.

That evening, after Leo was fast asleep in his bedroom, Audrey and I sat on the wooden deck overlooking the water, wrapped in a shared blanket with two mugs of hot tea.

The sky was painted in shades of deep violet and orange as the sun dipped beneath the horizon.

“Clara,” Audrey said quietly, turning to face me. He took my hand, his thumb gently tracing the back of my knuckles. “The last few years with you and Leo have been the happiest of my life.”

I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. “Mine too, Audrey.”

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee with grand, theatrical gestures; instead, he held it between us, opening it to reveal a simple, stunning ring set with a sapphire that matched the color of the ocean.

“I don't offer you a life free of memory, Clara,” Audrey said, his voice filled with deep sincerity. “But I promise you a future built on truth, respect, and unconditional love. I want to build a home with you, to watch Leo grow up together, and to face whatever comes next side by side. Will you marry me?”

Tears filled my eyes, but for the first time in my life, they were tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

“Yes,” I whispered, leaning in to kiss him as the ocean wind rustled through the trees around us. “Yes, Audrey. Absolutely.”

A month later, I felt an unusual wave of fatigue that persisted for several days. Remembering the nightmare of my past, I felt a brief moment of anxiety, but I immediately made an appointment with an independent specialist in another city.

The doctor performed a routine ultrasound while Audrey held my hand tightly in the quiet examination room.

The doctor smiled, turning the monitor toward us.

“Well, Ms. Reed,” the doctor said warmly. “It appears your body is completely healthy. In fact, you are eight weeks pregnant.”

I stared at the screen, watching the tiny, steady flicker of a heartbeat on the black-and-white display.

The lies that Sienna and Julian had spun—the claims that I was 'useless,' 'broken,' and 'unable to carry life'—were completely, permanently shattered. My body had healed. My spirit had healed.

Audrey leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, his own tears falling onto my cheek. “We’re going to have a baby,” he whispered.

“We’re going to have a family,” I corrected softly, smiling through my tears.
