The aftermath was swift and merciless. Federal agents pulled Eleanor, Paige, and the injured security guard from the blazing basement just before the fire department arrived to suppress the chemical fire. The local authorities, equipped with specialized hazardous materials suits, managed to contain the remaining biological specimens before they could escape into the residential neighborhood.
Brent was handcuffed right there on the kitchen floor, his expensive shirt ruined, his face smeared with soot and tears. He looked up at me as they dragged him away, his voice cracking. "Claire, please... we can talk about this. We can make a deal. I'll give you everything in the divorce!"
"There won't be a divorce, Brent," I said coldly, watching the agents lock the cuffs around his wrists. "There will only be an asset forfeiture. You're going to a federal penitentiary for the rest of your life."
I handed the leather ledger and the case of ampoules directly to Director Vance. He flipped through the pages, his expression growing more grave with each passing second.
"My God, Claire," Marcus said, looking up at me in disbelief. "You've uncovered an international assassination network. We've been looking for the source of these untraceable cardiac arrests for three years. We never suspected the Hale family was the logistical hub."
"They thought I was an ornament, Marcus," I said, wiping a streak of ash from my forehead. "They forgot that I know how to look for the truth."
"You did an incredible job, but you shouldn't have gone in there alone," Marcus reprimanded gently. "You could have been killed."
"I had to secure the evidence before they destroyed it," I replied. "And I knew my live stream would keep you close behind me."
Over the next forty-eight hours, the Hale family empire crumbled like a house of cards. The evidence in the ledger led to simultaneous federal raids across three states. Six prominent executives, two foreign diplomats, and a pharmaceutical CEO were arrested in connection with Project Lazarus.
