Part 2 – The Basement Behind the Safe

Part 2 – The Basement Behind the Safe

The police arrived before Daniel could make another move.

Two officers escorted Dr. Patel outside while detectives quietly separated my husband from me. Daniel kept insisting there had been some terrible misunderstanding, but sweat soaked the collar of his expensive shirt.

I remained calm.

"I'd like to show Detective Harris something," I said.

I opened my encrypted evidence vault.

The detective's eyebrows rose as file after file appeared.

Bank transfers.

Cash withdrawals.

Photographs of Daniel leaving warehouses after midnight.

Voice recordings of Vanessa discussing "insurance timing."

Copies of the veterinary invoice for imported insects.

"This wasn't collected overnight," Detective Harris said.

"No," I replied. "It took eleven months."

Daniel stared at me as though he'd never actually seen me before.

"You've been spying on me."

"I've been surviving you."

His face twisted with rage.

"You think this proves anything?"

Before I could answer, another detective hurried into the room.

"Judge signed the warrant."

"For the house?"

"And the storage basement."

Daniel's confidence disappeared.

"No."

His voice came out too quickly.

"You don't need the basement."

That was all the detectives needed to hear.

...

By sunset, our home was surrounded by police vehicles.

Vanessa arrived in her white luxury SUV, sunglasses covering half her face despite the fading light.

"What is this?" she demanded.

Detective Harris stepped in front of her.

"Ma'am, you're not permitted inside."

She laughed.

"My brother owns this house."

"No," I said quietly.

"My husband's mother owns the trust."

Vanessa turned toward me with pure hatred.

"You always were smarter than you looked."

"I know."

That answer unsettled her more than any insult could have.

Inside the basement, officers found the locked storage room.

Daniel had always claimed it contained ruined furniture.

It didn't.

Metal shelving lined every wall.

Hundreds of clear containers held carefully labeled insects.

Temperature-controlled incubators hummed softly.

Medical restraints sat on a steel table.

One detective whispered, "Good Lord..."

The lead investigator photographed everything.

Then another officer called everyone over.

Behind a false wall was a heavy safe.

Not filled with cash.

Not jewelry.

Evidence.

Life-insurance policies.

Forged powers of attorney.

Practice documents bearing my forged signature.

And a handwritten checklist.

Step 1: Obtain Emily's fingerprints.

Step 2: Transfer trust documents.

Step 3: Fatal infection appears natural.

Step 4: Collect insurance.

Detective Harris slowly looked at me.

"They weren't experimenting on Daniel."

I nodded.

"They were rehearsing."

Daniel suddenly lunged toward the staircase.

He didn't get far.

Three officers tackled him before he reached the first step.

Outside, Vanessa tried climbing back into her SUV.

She found another police cruiser blocking the driveway.

For the first time since I'd known her...

She looked afraid.
