Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

The victory in the courtroom was absolute, but in my world, an defeated enemy does not simply disappear; they become desperate. And a desperate enemy is the most dangerous kind.
In the weeks following the court case, Julian Vance and my mother realized they could no longer use the legal system to strip me of my daughters or destroy Elena. My legal team launched a counter-offensive, filing massive defamation lawsuits and initiating audits into the Vance corporate holdings that threatened to bankrupt Julian’s primary holdings.
Driven to the wall, Julian turned back to the shadowy, illegal channels he had sworn off years ago.
It was a cold November evening. The estate was quiet. Sofia had completed a full thirty-minute unassisted walking session on the grand lawn earlier that afternoon, a milestone we had celebrated with homemade ice cream in the kitchen.
I was sitting in my private study on the second floor, reviewing financial reports, when the internal comms unit on my desk buzzed with three sharp, red pulses—the code for an active perimeter breach.
I reached beneath my desk, pulling out a heavy black sidearm, racking the slide silently.
Before I could reach the door, Marco burst in, his tactical vest fastened tight, his submachine gun slung across his chest.
"Sir! We have multiple armed hostiles breaching the south gatehouse!" Marco reported quickly, his voice grim. "They jammed our external comms line and cut the power grid. Our backup generators just kicked in, but they've disabled the heavy iron perimeter gates!"
My eyes darkened. "Who are they?"
"Vance's private contractors," Marco spat. "Former mercenaries. They aren't here to serve papers, Adrian. Vance knows his empire is going under. He’s burning down the house."
"Where are Elena and the girls?" I demanded, my pulse hammering against my throat.
"Safe room in the east wing basement," Marco said. "I sent four men to secure the corridor outside."
"Good. Hold the main foyer," I ordered, stepping out into the hallway. "No one reaches the east wing alive."
The estate plunged into chaos. The muffled sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the lower levels, accompanied by the sharp shatter of reinforced glass. Julian Vance had sent over a dozen armed men to wipe out my security detail, desperate to erase me and stage an 'accidental' tragedy that would leave him in control of the Moretti legacy.
I moved down the secondary service corridor, my weapon raised, checking every corner with lethal precision. Two mercenaries in dark tactical gear rounded the bend near the conservatory. Before they could raise their rifles, I fired three quick, precise shots. Both men dropped to the floor without a sound.
I sprinted toward the east wing. As I neared the heavy steel door that led to the safe room, I saw two guards down on the carpet. Standing near the keypad of the safe room door was Julian Vance himself, wearing a dark trench coat, holding a silenced pistol, frantically trying to bypass the electronic lock with a military bypass tool.
"Julian," I said calmly, stepping out from the shadows into the hallway.
Julian spun around, his eyes wide with wild, unhinged fury. "Adrian! You ruined everything! My sister died because of you, and now you’ve given our family name to a peasant!"
"Clara died of a medical complication, Julian," I said, taking a slow, steady step forward, my gun locked onto his chest. "You know that. But you used her death to justify your greed for twenty years. And now you’ve brought armed men into my home where my children sleep."
"They aren't your children anymore!" Julian screamed, raising his weapon. "They belong to the Vance bloodline!"
Crack.
A single shot rang through the corridor.
Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, profound shock. He dropped his pistol, his hands reaching weakly toward his chest as he fell backward against the steel door of the safe room, sliding down onto the floor, unconscious.
I lowered my weapon, looking down the corridor. Marco stood at the far end, his rifle smoking, flanked by four additional guards who had secured the rest of the house.
"The perimeter is secure, Mr. Moretti," Marco reported, his breath coming in heavy ragged gasps. "The rest of his men have been neutralized or captured. The police are ten minutes out."
I didn't answer. I stepped past Julian’s motionless body and punched the nine-digit master security code into the digital keypad beside the door.
The heavy steel bolt retracted with a deep, hydraulic hiss.
The door swung open.
The safe room was dimly lit by emergency LED lights. In the corner, huddled behind a reinforced steel bench, was Elena. She was holding Lily and Sofia wrapped tightly in her arms, shielding them completely with her own body. She held a heavy iron fireplace poker in her right hand, ready to strike down whoever opened that door.
When she saw me standing in the doorway, blood on my sleeve, gun in my hand, but unhurt, the iron poker dropped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice choking on tears.
Sofia poked her head out from under Elena’s arm. "Daddy! Miss Elena said you were playing hide and seek with the bad noise!"

I dropped my gun into its holster, stepped into the room, and fell to my knees in front of them.
I pulled all three of them into my arms—my daughters and the woman who had protected them with her life—holding them so tightly that not even the darkness of the world outside could ever reach them again.
