Chapter 7 - Sunlight Through the Storm

Three days later, the La Jolla estate felt entirely different. The oppressive silence that had hung over the marble halls for three long years had finally lifted, replaced by the soft, genuine sound of laughter echoing from the sunroom.
Noah sat propped up against a pile of plush pillows on the outdoor terrace, a plate of fresh fruit and balanced snacks on the small table beside him. His color was vibrant, his cheeks full of life, and his eyes bright as he played a complex strategy board game with Rose.
“You’re letting me win again,” Noah accused playfully, moving his knight across the wooden board.
“I am doing no such thing, young man,” Rose laughed, adjusting her cardigan against the gentle Pacific breeze. “Your tactical positioning was genuinely brilliant on that last turn. Your mother would have been very proud.”
Noah smiled softly, looking down at his fingers. “Mom always said you were her best friend from the hospital before she had to leave. Why did you have to pretend to be a maid, Rose?”
“Because sometimes, sweetheart, the only way to protect someone you love is to stand where nobody thinks to look,” Rose explained gently, squeezing his hand. “And sometimes, you have to break the rules to save the people who matter most.”
From the doorway of the terrace, Ethan watched them.
Gone was the perpetually exhausted, razor-sharp tycoon who wore his stress like armor. In his place stood a father—a real father—who looked at his son with a heart full of deep, unfiltered love and gratitude.
Ethan walked out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. He handed one to Noah and set the other on the edge of the table near Rose.
“Doctor's orders,” Ethan said with a faint, warm smile, looking at Rose. “Hydration and proper rest for both of you.”
Rose looked up, taking the glass. “Thank you, Ethan. Though I think my days of housekeeping are officially over. Federal investigators are auditing BioGenesis Corp this morning, and my medical credentials have been fully reinstated by the state medical board.”
Ethan pulled up a chair and sat down beside them, looking out over the sparkling ocean. “Which means I am currently in urgent need of a brilliant pediatric endocrinologist to oversee Noah’s long-term care plan... and perhaps someone to help me manage a household that has been run like a fortress for far too long.”
Noah looked between his father and Rose, a knowing, mischievous grin spreading across his face. “Does that mean Rose gets to stay forever?”
Ethan looked at Rose, meeting her warm, understanding eyes—eyes that had shared his late wife’s final secrets and helped heal his fractured family.

“Only,” Ethan said softly, reaching across the table to take Rose’s hand, “if she agrees to break all the rules permanently.”
Rose smiled, her fingers intertwining with his as the warm California sun broke fully through the clouds, bathing the entire estate in golden, unbroken light.
