Chapter 10 - The Forever Home

The charity gala on a balmy Saturday evening was a resounding success, drawing community leaders, philanthropists, and supporters from across the region to honor the launch of the Isabella Duca Foundation.

The grand ballroom glittered under the light of crystal chandeliers, filled with the soft murmur of classical string music and polite conversation. Yet, despite the high-profile guests and influential dignitaries in attendance, the heart of the evening remained entirely grounded in family and genuine human connection.

Late in the evening, after the speeches had concluded and the cameras had stopped flashing, I stepped out onto the wide stone balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens.

The night air was cool and fragrant.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me, followed by the familiar rustle of fabric. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.

Lily stepped out beside me, her small hands resting on the stone balustrade. She was wearing a simple white dress with a pale blue sash, and tucked securely under her arm was her cream-colored teddy bear, its left ear neatly stitched with cream cotton thread.

“Are you tired, sweetheart?” I asked, wrapping a light cashmere shawl gently around her shoulders.

“No, Papa,” Lily said, looking up at me with Isabella’s luminous, expressive eyes. “I’m just happy.”

“So am I, Lily,” I murmured, resting my chin gently against the top of her soft brown hair. “So am I.”

Down in the courtyard below, Emma was chasing a glowing firefly near the stone fountain, laughing as her mother Sophia watched from a nearby bench, clapping her hands gently in encouragement. Matteo stood nearby, smoking a rare cigar and smiling like a proud grandfather surveying his own backyard.

There were no locked secrets hidden inside stuffed toys anymore. There was no fear lingering in the dark corners of the hallways, no shadows waiting to strike from behind a mask of trusted service.

There was only the quiet, unbreakable strength of a home that had weathered the worst of the storm and finally found its way back into the light.

I looked down at my daughter, then out across the vast, peaceful expanse of the Duca estate under the brilliant canopy of stars.

We had survived the past. And for the first time in a very long time, the future belonged entirely to us.
