Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The sun dipped below the western tree line of the estate, casting long, golden shadows across the lawn as evening settled over the Chicago suburbs.

Inside the grand dining hall, a long mahogany table was set for a quiet family dinner. There were no syndicate captains present, no nervous judges, no armed lieutenants standing guard by the doors. Just Roman, Elena, and little Nico sitting in a high chair, enthusiastically smashing a spoonful of mashed peas against his tray while babbling in a language only toddlers understood.

Roman sat at the head of the table, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching Elena laugh as Nico managed to launch a green pea directly into her hair.

"I think he's trying to tell us something about his dietary preferences," Elena joked, wiping the pea off her forehead with a linen napkin while grinning across the table.

"He gets his stubbornness from his father," Roman replied, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest.

"And his excellent taste from his nurse," Elena added smoothly, raising her water glass in a mock toast.

Roman raised his glass to meet hers, the crystal ringing with a clear, resonant chime that echoed softly through the warm room.

The ghosts of the past — the explosions, the corrupt doctors, the dark syndicate nights, and the nineteen heartbreaking days outside a glass incubator — felt a million miles away now. They hadn't vanished; they were part of who they had become, scars etched into the foundation of a life built on resilience, truth, and unyielding love.

Later that evening, after Nico had been tucked safely into his crib with his favorite stuffed bear, Roman and Elena stood together on the wide stone balcony overlooking the moonlit gardens.

The night air was cool and crisp, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard below.

Elena wrapped her arms around herself against the evening breeze, leaning slightly against Roman’s shoulder as he stood beside her, his arm wrapped securely around her waist.

"Do you ever think about how close we came to losing everything?" Elena asked softly, her gaze fixed on the bright cluster of stars twinkling above the city skyline.

Roman looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a profound, unshakable warmth. He tightened his grip around her shoulders, pulling her just a fraction closer against the cold night air.

"I don't think about what we almost lost," Roman said, his voice deep and steady, carrying the absolute conviction of a man who had conquered his own private hell and found heaven on the other side. "I only look at what we fought for. And we won."

Elena smiled, resting her head gently against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart beneath his shirt.

Down below, the estate fountains splashed softly in the dark, the lights of Chicago twinkled like distant diamonds on the horizon, and inside the nursery, a little boy slept peacefully in the safe, warm heart of a family that nothing on earth could ever break again.
