Part 2: The Boy Who Refused to Run

The gates exploded inward before the security guards even had time to react.

Matteo Lombardi's convoy stormed into the scrapyard like a hurricane.

Headlights cut through the freezing darkness, illuminating mountains of twisted steel and garbage that stretched across acres of abandoned land.

Somewhere inside that maze...

Lily was crying.

"Spread out!" Paulie shouted.

Forty armed men rushed in every direction while workers fled in panic.

Caleb suddenly grabbed Matteo's sleeve.

"No..."

Matteo looked down.

"What is it?"

"The cars didn't stop near the office," Caleb whispered. "They drove behind the red crane."

He pointed toward the oldest section of the dump.

"The little girl was crying over there."

Matteo didn't hesitate.

"You come with me."

Paulie frowned.

"Boss, it's dangerous."

"So is leaving him alone."

They ran through piles of rusted appliances until they reached a line of enormous steel containers waiting for the morning compactors.

Everything was silent.

Then...

A tiny voice.

"Daddy..."

Matteo froze.

For a moment he thought he had imagined it.

"Daddy..."

It came again.

Weak.

Scared.

Very real.

"Lily!"

He climbed onto one of the containers and ripped at the heavy metal lid with his bare hands.

It wouldn't move.

Three men rushed forward with crowbars.

The hinges snapped.

The lid crashed onto the concrete.

Inside, beneath broken cardboard and plastic bags, sat a little girl wrapped in a pink blanket.

Her cheeks were stained with tears.

Her hands were tied loosely with zip ties.

The moment she saw Matteo, she reached toward him.

"Daddy!"

Matteo jumped into the container without thinking.

He held her so tightly she squeaked.

"I've got you."

"I'm here."

"No one is ever taking you away again."

Lily buried her face against his neck.

"I knew you'd come."

Even Paulie looked away to hide the tears in his eyes.

Caleb stood quietly nearby, smiling for the first time in years.

Then gunfire shattered the moment.

Bullets slammed into the metal container.

"AMBUSH!"

Dozens of masked men appeared from behind stacks of crushed cars.

Dante Caruso hadn't expected Matteo to find Lily so quickly.

But he had expected him to come.

Paulie pushed Matteo behind the container.

"Take Lily!"

The scrapyard erupted into chaos.

Headlights shattered.

Glass exploded.

Men fought through smoke and freezing rain.

Caleb crawled beside Lily, covering her ears.

"It's okay," he whispered.

"My mom used to sing when I got scared."

He began humming softly.

Lily stopped crying.

Matteo noticed.

In the middle of a battlefield, a homeless boy who owned nothing was comforting the richest little girl in Chicago.

Something inside him shifted.

After twenty brutal minutes, Caruso's soldiers surrendered.

But Dante himself escaped into the darkness.

Paulie cursed.

"We lost him."

Matteo looked at Caleb instead.

"You saved my daughter's life."

The boy shrugged.

"I just didn't want her to be alone."

Matteo knelt in front of him.

"When was the last time someone looked for you?"

Caleb didn't answer.

May you like

He simply stared at the ground.

That silence told Matteo everything.
