Chapter 8 - The Ascent to the Penthouse

The rest of the day passed in a surreal blur for Maisie.

Down in the kitchen, the prep cooks and dishwashers whispered among themselves about the sudden disappearance of Julian Vance and his enforcers before sunrise, speaking in hushed tones about how Reed Ashford had purged the syndicate from top to bottom in a single night. No one knew the details, but the atmosphere in Pharaoh was charged with a new, electric reverence.

Maisie went through her routine mechanically, chopping vegetables, simmering stocks, and managing her station with her usual quiet precision. But her thumb kept brushing against the heavy, sleek surface of the black card tucked securely inside her apron pocket.

By 10:00 PM, the restaurant had closed its doors to the public. The last patrons trickled out into the cool Boston night, leaving the sprawling establishment bathed in soft, amber lighting.

Maisie cleaned her station until the stainless steel counters gleamed. She washed her hands, unpinned her apron, and stared at her reflection in the small mirror above the sink. For the first time in years, she didn't look like a ghost hiding in the background.

She took a deep breath, walked out of the kitchen, and bypassed the service stairs entirely.

At the end of the private corridor near the back of the building stood a private elevator—a glass-and-steel shaft that required a master biometric scan or a direct override key. Maisie pulled the black card from her pocket and pressed it against the scanner panel.

Click.

The heavy doors slid open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, revealing a pristine, velvet-lined interior that smelled faintly of cedar and rain. She stepped inside, and the doors closed, lifting her smoothly and silently up through the upper floors of Pharaoh, far above the chaos of the syndicate, far above the streets of Boston, straight into the private world of Reed Ashford.

When the elevator doors opened again, Maisie stepped out into a space that took her breath away.

The penthouse was a massive, open-concept loft with floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering a panoramic view of the glittering Boston skyline. Sleek black marble floors reflected the city lights below, contrasting with minimalist modern furniture, rows of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a massive stone fireplace at the center of the room.

It was breathtaking, yet somehow, it felt entirely empty. A fortress of glass and wealth, echoing with the same profound loneliness she had seen in Reed's eyes the night before.

"You found it," a deep, smooth voice murmured from the shadows near the kitchen island.

Maisie jumped slightly, turning to see Reed walking out from the adjoining hallway. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into a crisp black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the pale skin and old scars that matched her own. He looked less like a syndicate boss and more like a man finally stepping out of armor he had worn for too long.

"I didn't think the card would actually work for me," Maisie admitted, her voice barely audible in the vast quiet of the penthouse.

"It works for no one else on earth," Reed replied, stopping a few feet away from her. A faint, genuine smile touched his lips. "Welcome to my home, Maisie."
