Chapter 8 - The Celebration

Two months later, the estate hosted its annual summer gala—an event traditionally reserved for high-ranking business associates, diplomats, and influential figures in the city's political sphere.
In previous years, under Evelyn Crane’s management, the gala had been a cold, rigid display of wealth and arrogance. Staff members were hidden behind velvet curtains, restricted to background service, and warned against making eye contact with guests.
This year, the energy was entirely different.
The grand ballroom was illuminated by crystal chandeliers, its French doors opened wide to the terrace and gardens. Music from a live jazz quartet floated through the warm summer night air.
I stood near the grand terrace, wearing a tailored tuxedo, sipping champagne while speaking with the city's Deputy Mayor and chief police commissioner—men who understood the unwritten rules of my authority in this city.
"An exceptional turnout, Vincenzo," the commissioner remarked, gesturing toward the crowd of two hundred guests. "And I must say, the atmosphere feels remarkably... welcoming tonight."
"A house reflects the spirit of the people who run it," I replied calmly.
Across the room, Anna stood conversing effortlessly with the head of the city's arts council. She wore an elegant burgundy evening gown, handling her duties as Household Director with grace and poise. The domestic staff moved through the room with pride, dressed in high-end tailored uniforms, treated with dignity by every guest in attendance.
Suddenly, a quiet ripple of laughter spread through the crowd near the main entrance.
I looked over and saw Lily walking into the ballroom. She was wearing a lovely white summer dress with yellow daisies, her hair tied in bright yellow ribbons. On her right leg, her custom carbon-fiber brace glinted under the chandelier lights—no longer something to hide, but a symbol of her strength.
She held a small tray containing three tiny iced cupcakes, carefully navigating her way across the polished dance floor.
The Deputy Mayor blinked in surprise. "Is that... a child on the floor?"
"That is Lily," I said, setting my champagne glass down on a passing silver tray. "The most important person in this house."
I walked across the ballroom floor. The crowd of wealthy elites parted instinctively as I approached the little girl.
Lily stopped when she saw me, holding her tray up with extreme care. "Mr. Moretti! Mommy said I could bring you a cupcake because you worked hard today."
I looked down at the tiny vanilla cupcake with bright blue frosting. Then I looked up at the hundreds of influential figures watching us in silence.
I didn't care about their opinions. I didn't care about syndicate politics or territorial dominance.
I knelt down on the polished hardwood floor in my thousand-dollar tuxedo, taking the small cupcake from her tray.
"Thank you, Lily," I said, taking a bite. "It’s the best cupcake I’ve ever had."
Lily giggled, her bright, clear laughter filling the grand room, echoing off the high ceilings and gilded mirrors. "It has sprinkles inside!"
"So it does," I smiled, wiping a tiny speck of blue frosting from my lip. "Would you like to dance?"
Her eyes widened with excitement. "Can I? With my magic boot?"
"Especially with your magic boot," I said.
I stood up, took her small hand in mine, and led her to the center of the dance floor. The jazz quartet, catching my signal, smoothly transitioned into a slow, gentle waltz.

I held her hand high and let her twirl beneath my arm. She spun around effortlessly, her light footwork executing perfect circles on the smooth, unblemished wood. No thresholds to catch her. No obstacles in her path. No apologies needed.
Around us, the crowd broke into genuine, warm applause. Anna stood at the edge of the floor, tears shining in her eyes, holding a hand over her heart.
