Part 2 – The Promise No Mafia Boss Expected

Three days later, Nora Blake woke to the steady beep of hospital monitors.

Her shoulder felt as though someone had driven a knife through it. Every breath reminded her that the bullet had missed her heart by less than two inches.

A nurse smiled when she opened her eyes.

"Welcome back."

"How long?"

"Seventy-two hours."

Nora blinked.

"The little girl..."

"Safe."

Only then did she finally relax.

A knock sounded on the door.

The room became strangely quiet.

Four men in tailored black suits entered first, checking every corner.

Then Vincent Callahan walked inside.

He carried no gun.

No bodyguards remained once he stepped to her bedside.

For a long moment he simply looked at her.

"You almost died."

Nora smiled weakly.

"I noticed."

He placed a small paper bag beside her bed.

Inside was the stuffed rabbit Lily had been holding in the diner.

"She refuses to sleep without this," Vincent said quietly.

"But she insisted it belongs to you now."

Nora gently touched the worn ears.

"How is she?"

Vincent hesitated.

"She hasn't spoken to anyone."

"...except?"

"She asks for you every hour."

Silence filled the room.

Finally he spoke again.

"My wife died two years ago."

Nora looked up.

"Lily watched cancer take her mother one piece at a time."

His jaw tightened.

"Before Elena died..."

His voice nearly failed.

"...we argued."

He stared out the hospital window.

"I told her that the family came before everything."

A painful laugh escaped him.

"I actually said, 'You're replaceable. The empire isn't.'"

He closed his eyes.

"They were the last cruel words I ever spoke to her."

Nora said nothing.

Some grief deserved silence.

"I never apologized."

His voice broke.

"She died six hours later."

For the first time since entering, the feared mafia boss looked like nothing more than a broken husband.

"I've built an empire," he whispered.

"And lost the only person who ever loved the man beneath it."

That afternoon Lily burst into the hospital room before security could stop her.

"Nora!"

She climbed carefully onto the bed and hugged her without touching the injured shoulder.

"I knew you'd wake up."

Nora smiled through tears.

"I promised you I wasn't going anywhere."

Lily held her hand.

"You can come home now."

Vincent immediately interrupted.

"Lily..."

"No."

The little girl crossed her arms.

"Our house isn't home anymore."

She looked directly at Nora.

"Home is wherever she is."

Over the next several weeks, Nora returned to work despite her injury.

Bills did not stop because people got shot.

Neither did rent.

Every morning she tied on the same faded apron.

Every afternoon a black SUV appeared outside Ruby's Diner.

Not for protection.

For lunch.

Vincent always ordered coffee.

Lily always ordered pancakes.

They always asked for Nora.

Little by little, the frightened child smiled again.

She laughed.

She colored pictures.

She waited every day for the waitress who had become her safest place.

Even Hank noticed.

"You've got yourself adopted," the old cook muttered.

Nora laughed.

"I don't think it's that simple."

Across the diner, Vincent watched Lily laugh harder than she had in two years.
