Chapter 5 - Echoes of the Past

The air in the library instantly evaporated.

Willa stood up so fast her tea mug overturned, splashing hot liquid across the rug. Titan bolted upright, his massive ears pinned back, a low, guttural growl rumbling deep in his chest as he sensed the sharp shift in the room's energy.

"No," Willa whispered, her hands flying to her mouth. "No, no, no... Sarah. Sarah has a kid. Oh God, Brendan... he's crazy, Jared, he's out of his mind!"

Panic, raw and suffocating, threatened to drag her under. The dark memories she had fought so hard to bury came rushing back: the sound of boots kicking open a bathroom door, the metallic smell of blood, the cold, heavy grip of Brendan’s hands around her throat as he screamed that she would never leave him alive.

She lunged toward the door, but Jared moved with terrifying speed. In a flash, his large frame blocked her path. He grabbed her upper arms—not roughly, but with firm, unbreakable strength that anchored her in place.

"Look at me, Willa," Jared commanded. His voice was absolute steel. "Look at me right now."

Willa looked up, tears blurring her vision, her body shaking violently. "Let me go! He'll kill her! He thinks I stole from him, he thinks—"

"He's not going to kill anyone," Jared said, his gray eyes flashing with an ancient, lethal fury. "Because he has about three minutes left to live."

Jared turned his head toward Miles, who was standing at attention by the door. "Miles. Send Command Team Alpha to the clinic. Tell them to take the target alive if possible, broken if necessary. Secure the woman—Sarah—and her child. Bring them to the West Side safehouse immediately."

"Right away, boss," Miles said, turning to leave.

"Wait!" Jared added, his voice cold enough to freeze water. "Tell them if a single hair on that woman's head is harmed, every commander on that street answers to me personally."

Miles vanished down the hall.

Jared turned his focus back to Willa. She was breathing in short, ragged gasps, her forehead coming to rest against his chest as the panic attack washed over her. Instinctively, Jared’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her close, shielding her against his body. Titan pressed his huge flank against her legs, creating a physical barrier of pure protection around her.

"He found me," Willa sobbed into his shirt. "I changed my name. I moved three times. I did everything right..."

"He didn't find you because of anything you did," Jared murmured softly, his hand resting on the back of her head, his fingers threading through her hair with unexpected gentleness. "He followed the paper trail of the buyout I made at the clinic. It was my fault. I brought him out of the shadows."

Willa pulled back slightly, staring up at him through tear-stained eyes. "He's dangerous, Jared. You don't understand how he thinks. He doesn't care about dying, he just cares about control."

A cold, dark smile touched the corner of Jared Kensington's lips. It was the smile of a predator that had just been invited to a hunt.

"Little bird," Jared said softly, wiping a tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. "He plays in the dirt. I own the ground he stands on. He has no idea what kind of monster he just woke up."

Twenty minutes passed in agonizing silence. Jared led Willa to the plush leather couch in his private study, sitting beside her while Titan laid his heavy head across her knees, acting as a living anchor. Jared stayed on his phone, issuing silent, deadly instructions in short, sharp sentences that made Willa realize just how vast his dark empire truly was.

At 1:15 AM, Jared’s phone buzzed. He answered, putting it on speaker.

"Boss," Miles's voice came through the line, perfectly clear. "The clinic is secure. Miss Thornton's friend, Sarah, is completely unharmed. She's in the back of our transport with her daughter, heading to the safehouse now. She's shaken, but safe."

Willa let out a long, ragged breath, letting her head fall back against the sofa cushion. "Thank God..."

"And the target?" Jared asked, his eyes fixing on the dark window.

"We have Brendan Vance in custody," Miles replied. "He was armed with a snub-nosed revolver. He put up a fight. He's... bruised. We have him locked in the basement of the Brooklyn warehouse."

Jared stayed silent for a moment, processing. He looked down at Willa. Her face was pale, her hands still trembling slightly, but the sheer terror in her eyes was slowly giving way to something else: a deep, aching exhaustion born from running for too long.

"Do you want him gone, Willa?" Jared asked quietly. The question hung in the air, loaded with lethal certainty. "Say the word, and he ceases to exist. No trial. No body. No memory."

Willa stared at the phone, her heart pounding. The temptation was overwhelming. To end it. To finally know that Brendan would never, ever walk through a door again. But as she looked at Jared—at the absolute darkness he was willing to unleash for her—she knew that if she let him murder Brendan in cold blood, she would be letting the darkness win.

"No," Willa said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I want to look him in the eye. I want him to know that he failed."

Jared studied her face for a long, quiet moment. Respect, deep and unyielding, flickered in his gray eyes.

"Get the car," Jared told Miles over the line. "We're going to Brooklyn."
