PART 3 The House That Became Home

One year later.
Greystone Manor no longer looked abandoned.
Children's bicycles rested beside the front steps.
Flowers bloomed where weeds once grew.
The old painting studio was filled with sunlight again.
Only now two little easels stood beside Elena's.
Nova covered her nose with blue paint.
"I'm making Mommy."
Logan laughed.
"The hair isn't supposed to be purple."
Nova grinned.
"It is in my picture."
Across the room Luna sat at an antique desk, carefully writing in a leather notebook.
"What are you working on?" Logan asked.
She smiled shyly.
"A story."
"About what?"
"A scary man."
Logan raised an eyebrow.
"Does he become nice?"
She nodded.
"Because two girls teach him how."
Marcus walked in carrying a large frame.
Inside was Elena's final sketch.
Not the frightened one.
A different drawing found on the last flash drive.
It showed Greystone Manor in spring.
Three figures stood on the porch.
A tall man holding the hands of two little girls.
Above them Elena had written:
Home isn't where you hide.
It's where love finally finds you.
Logan hung the picture above the fireplace.
Exactly where everyone could see it.
Months later, the courts officially approved the adoption.
The judge smiled.
"So, Logan Marchetti, do you accept full responsibility for Nova and Luna Hayes?"
The little girls squeezed his hands.
For a man who had negotiated million-dollar deals without blinking, his voice almost failed him.
"I do."
The judge signed the papers.
"It is my pleasure to declare you a family."
Nova immediately climbed into his lap.
Luna quietly slipped a folded piece of paper into his jacket pocket.
When they reached home, Logan unfolded it.
It was a drawing.
Three people sitting on the porch beneath a bright summer sky.
No rain.
No fear.
No ghosts.
Only smiles.
At the bottom, in careful childish handwriting, Luna had written:
"Mommy said Uncle Logan would find us.
She was right."
For the first time since losing his sister eight years before, Logan looked toward the Hudson River without seeing a grave.
May you like
He saw tomorrow.
And inside the old country house, where silence had once lived, the sound of two little girls laughing echoed through every room, turning a place haunted by loss into the happiest home Elena could have ever imagined.
