Part 4 – The Night Chicago Burned

Part 4 – The Night Chicago Burned

The red light above the operating room stayed on.

One hour.

Then two.

Victor Callaway never sat when he was waiting.

He stood outside the ICU with dried blood on his hands, his black suit stained where he had pressed it against Emily Parker's shoulder to slow the bleeding.

Doctors came and went.

Nurses whispered.

No one asked him to leave.

The entire fourth floor had become strangely quiet.

Not because of hospital policy.

Because everyone knew who was standing outside those doors.

Dominic Reyes approached carefully.

"They've secured the mansion."

Victor didn't answer.

"We lost four guards."

Still nothing.

"Two are dead."

Victor finally spoke.

"Families?"

"We've already contacted them."

"They'll be taken care of."

Victor nodded once.

"They died protecting my house."

His voice was low.

"Their children will never worry about money again."

Dominic wasn't surprised.

For all the stories the city told about Victor Callaway, one thing had always been true.

He never abandoned the families of people who stood beside him.

The operating room doors finally opened.

A surgeon removed his mask.

"Mr. Callaway?"

Victor stepped forward immediately.

"She survived."

For the first time that night, Victor closed his eyes.

"The bullet passed through her shoulder and narrowly missed a major artery."

The doctor continued,

"She lost a great deal of blood, but she's stable."

"When can I see her?"

"She's unconscious."

"But only for a few minutes."

Emily slowly opened her eyes.

Everything was white.

White ceiling.

White curtains.

White sheets.

The steady beeping of a heart monitor echoed beside her.

Then she saw him.

Victor sat quietly in the chair beside her bed.

His jacket was gone.

The sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up.

He looked as though he hadn't moved in hours.

"You stayed..."

Victor looked up.

"I said I would protect you."

Emily tried to smile.

"I wasn't very good at making that easy."

"You saved my life."

She closed her eyes for a moment.

"I didn't think."

"I know."

Victor leaned forward.

"You've done that twice now."

Emily looked confused.

"I only did what anyone would do."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"Most people would have run."

Before either of them could say another word, Dominic entered.

"Boss."

His expression was grim.

"We found Marcus."

Victor stood.

"Alive?"

"No."

Dominic hesitated.

"He disappeared."

Victor frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"We raided every safe house."

"Every warehouse."

"Every apartment."

"He vanished."

Across the city...

Marcus Reed sat inside an abandoned steel factory.

He watched the news in silence.

No mention of him.

No photographs.

No names.

Only reports of gunfire at a private estate.

He smiled.

"They still don't know."

One of his men approached.

"What now?"

Marcus looked toward the dark skyline.

"We finish what we started."

The next morning...

Victor returned to Callaway Manor.

It no longer felt like home.

Broken windows.

Bullet holes.

Bloodstains on polished marble.

The mansion looked like a battlefield.

He walked slowly through the entrance hall.

His eyes stopped on one spot.

A small pool of dried blood.

Emily's blood.

He knelt.

For a long moment, he simply stared at it.

Then he stood.

"Enough."

Dominic looked at him.

"I built this empire because I believed power kept people safe."

Victor's voice echoed through the empty hall.

"I was wrong."

Hours later...

Every captain in the Callaway organization gathered in the conference room.

No one spoke.

Victor entered alone.

Without Marcus.

Everyone noticed.

Victor placed a single black folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

The bomb.

The dead gunmen.

Marcus.

Evidence.

Names.

Bank records.

Call logs.

Victor looked at every man in the room.

"Marcus Reed betrayed us."

Silence.

"If anyone here still answers to him..."

"...leave now."

No one moved.

Victor continued.

"Because if I discover it later..."

"...there won't be a second chance."

That night...

Marcus finally made contact.

A video call appeared on Victor's encrypted phone.

Victor answered.

Marcus smiled.

"You look tired."

Victor stared back.

"You should have killed me when you had the chance."

Marcus laughed.

"I almost did."

Victor's expression never changed.

"Why?"

Marcus leaned back.

"Twelve years."

"I spent twelve years helping you build an empire."

"And what did I become?"

"Your employee."

Victor remained silent.

Marcus continued.

"You were respected."

"I was invisible."

"I decided I wanted your chair."

Victor answered calmly.

"So you murdered innocent people."

Marcus shrugged.

"They weren't important."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"They were to me."

Marcus smiled.

"That's your weakness."

Before ending the call, Marcus said one final sentence.

"The maid dies next."

The screen went black.

Victor was already moving.

"Double the hospital security."

Dominic grabbed his phone.

"It'll be done."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"I'm going myself."

At St. Matthew Medical Center...

The night shift had just begun.

Emily's mother sat beside the hospital bed, holding her daughter's hand.

Emily was finally awake.

"You should rest," her mother whispered.

Emily smiled.

"I will."

A nurse entered.

"Visiting hours are over."

Emily's mother stood.

"I'll come back in the morning."

She kissed Emily's forehead.

As the door closed...

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire hallway went dark.

Emergency lights turned on.

A man dressed as a hospital orderly quietly stepped out of the stairwell.

He wasn't carrying medicine.

He was carrying a silenced pistol.

Outside...

Victor's convoy reached the hospital entrance.

The instant he stepped from the vehicle, every instinct he possessed screamed that something was wrong.

The lights.

The silence.

Too quiet.

He ran.

Past the reception desk.

Past frightened nurses.

Toward the ICU.

Exactly as he had the night before.

The fake orderly reached Emily's room.

He quietly opened the door.

Emily looked toward him.

"Can I help—"

He raised the pistol.

Before he could pull the trigger—

A gunshot thundered down the hallway.

The assassin collapsed.

Victor stood in the doorway.

His pistol still smoking.

Emily stared at him.

"You..."

Victor lowered the weapon.

"I told you."

"I'm not letting anyone hurt you again."

The failed assassination changed everything.

By sunrise, federal agents arrived.

Not to arrest Victor.

To question him.

The attacks had become impossible to ignore.

Bombs.

Ambushes.

Assassination attempts.

Chicago was on the edge of an underworld war.

Victor answered every question.

For the first time in his life...

He volunteered information.

Dominic watched in disbelief.

Later he asked,

"Boss..."

"You've never worked with them before."

Victor looked through the hospital window.

"I have bigger enemies now."

Three days later...

Emily was discharged from the hospital.

Her shoulder remained heavily bandaged.

She still couldn't lift her left arm.

Victor personally drove her away from the hospital.

No convoy.

No bodyguards.

Just the two of them.

Emily looked out the window.

"Where are we going?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"Somewhere Marcus doesn't know."

They drove for nearly two hours.

Far beyond Chicago.

Far beyond the neighborhoods controlled by either side.

Eventually, the road opened onto a quiet lake surrounded by pine trees.

A small wooden cabin stood beside the water.

Emily looked surprised.

"You own this?"

Victor nodded.

"My father built it."

"I haven't been here in fifteen years."

"It was the only place where no one cared who I was."

For the first time in years...

Victor cooked dinner.

Poorly.

The pasta was overcooked.

The sauce burned slightly.

Emily laughed.

Victor looked offended.

"It isn't that bad."

She couldn't stop laughing.

"It really is."

Victor laughed too.

A genuine laugh.

One Dominic would never have believed possible.

For a few precious hours...

There were no guns.

No bodyguards.

No betrayals.

Just two ordinary people eating terrible pasta beside a quiet lake.

That night...

Emily stood outside on the wooden dock.

The stars reflected across the still water.

Victor joined her.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally Emily asked,

"What happens when Marcus is gone?"

Victor looked across the lake.

"I don't know."

"You'll still have your empire."

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

Emily looked at him.

"I've been thinking."

"About what?"

Victor took a long breath.

"Maybe it's time to end it."

She searched his face.

"You mean..."

"I built a life where everyone around me either feared me..."

"...or wanted me dead."

He looked at Emily.

"Then you walked into my foyer."

"You changed everything."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer—

A phone rang.

Dominic.

Victor answered.

"We found Marcus."

Silence.

Then Dominic said,

"He's gathered every remaining loyalist."

"Tomorrow night..."

"...he wants one final battle."

Victor looked back toward the peaceful cabin.

He knew this would be the last fight.

One way or another, the war would end before another sunrise.

And when it did, he intended to leave the darkness behind forever.
