Part 2 – The Woman Everyone Buried

"I know," the little girl answered quietly. "Mama said if I ever found a man wearing that ring, I had to tell him my name."

Dominic's pulse slowed into something far more dangerous than panic.

"And your name is?"

The girl looked down at her hands.

"Emily."

It was such an ordinary name.

Yet somehow it echoed through the car like an explosion.

Paulie met Dominic's eyes in the rearview mirror. Neither man spoke.

The Mercedes rolled through the rain-soaked streets toward the forgotten apartment blocks east of the river. Every traffic light felt slower than the last.

Dominic had spent years controlling New York.

Tonight, he had never felt less in control.

Building Four stood between abandoned warehouses and condemned factories.

Its brick walls were stained black from decades of neglect.

Broken windows had been covered with cardboard.

The elevator no longer worked.

The hallway smelled of mildew, old cigarettes, and sickness.

Emily climbed the stairs without hesitation.

"Fifth floor."

Dominic followed.

His bodyguards spread through the stairwell, checking every landing.

Paulie whispered into his earpiece.

"No movement."

Still...

Dominic couldn't shake the feeling someone was watching.

Apartment 5C had no number on the door.

Emily pushed it open.

Inside was almost empty.

One mattress.

One folding chair.

A tiny electric heater that barely glowed.

Medical bottles covered a small table.

Near the window, a woman lay asleep beneath three blankets.

At first Dominic only noticed how thin she was.

Then he saw her hair.

Still dark.

Still long.

Though streaked now with silver.

The woman coughed.

Slowly...

She opened her eyes.

For several endless seconds neither of them breathed.

"Dominic..."

Her voice was barely louder than the rain outside.

He felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"Clara?"

She smiled weakly.

"I always knew you'd find me."

Paulie looked between them in disbelief.

"Boss..."

Dominic raised one hand.

Silence.

He walked forward as if afraid she might vanish.

"You died."

"I tried."

"You were in the river."

"They wanted you to believe that."

Dominic frowned.

"They?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"The men who betrayed you."

Six years earlier Dominic had trusted three captains to move millions of dollars through the docks.

Only one shipment disappeared.

Then Clara's car went over the bridge.

Dominic believed his enemies had killed her.

What he never learned...

...was that the betrayal had come from inside his own organization.

The three captains had kidnapped Clara before the crash.

They had forced another woman into her car.

Then they drove it into the river.

The body was never identified.

Everyone assumed it belonged to Clara.

The perfect disappearance.

"They kept me alive," Clara whispered.

"They thought you hid account numbers with me."

Dominic's hands curled into fists.

"I told them nothing."

"They believed I'd eventually break."

Instead...

She escaped.

But not before months of torture had destroyed her health.

By then Dominic's empire had grown even larger.

His enemies still hunted her.

The only way to protect both him and their unborn child...

...was to disappear forever.

Dominic stared.

"Our..."

Clara nodded.

"Emily is your daughter."

The room became completely silent.

Dominic looked toward the little girl.

She was coloring quietly with broken crayons, as if conversations like this happened every day.

His daughter.

Six years.

Six birthdays.

Six Christmas mornings.

Six years he would never get back.

He slowly knelt before Emily.

"Did your mother tell you about me?"

Emily nodded.

"She said you were scary."

Paulie almost laughed.

Emily continued.

"But only to bad people."

Dominic swallowed hard.

"And to you?"

She studied him for several seconds.

"I don't know yet."

For the first time in years...

The most feared man in New York had no answer.

A violent cough interrupted the silence.

Clara doubled over.

Blood stained the towel in her hand.

Dominic's face changed instantly.

"What happened?"

She tried to hide it.

"It's nothing."

A nearby bottle revealed the truth.

Stage Four Lung Disease.

The medication had expired weeks ago.

Emily looked away.

"We don't have money anymore."

Dominic stood.

His voice became ice.

"Paulie."

"Yeah, Boss?"

"Every doctor in Manhattan."

"Tonight."

"And find the three men who stole six years from my family."

Paulie nodded once.

"They won't see sunrise."

Dominic looked toward Clara.

"No."

Paulie blinked.

"No?"

"They're going to face justice."

The words surprised even Dominic himself.

"I've buried enough people."

For the first time...

Revenge no longer felt like victory.

By sunrise, a private medical team had transformed the tiny apartment into a temporary intensive care unit.

The city's best specialists worked without asking questions.

None of them dared.

Dominic never left Clara's side.

Neither did Emily.

When morning sunlight finally reached the broken window...

Emily quietly slipped her tiny hand into Dominic's.

He looked down.

She smiled.

Just a little.

It was enough.

May you like

For the first time in six years...

Hope entered the room.
