Chapter 7 - The Unseen Guardian

Life in the small apartment on the fifth floor had undergone a transformation that felt nothing short of magical to Elena Bellini.
Every single morning for the past two weeks, a fresh delivery waited outside her door. Sometimes it was groceries; other times it was books, warm blankets, or educational toys for Lia. The anonymous envelope containing cash arrived like clockwork every Monday, ensuring that Elena could finally pay off the back rent, clear the utility debts, and purchase proper medical supplies for her chronic cough.
More importantly, she had received an official notification from the municipal labor court stating that a massive, anonymous restitution fund had been established in Marco’s name, fully compensating her for the wrongful death and securing a guaranteed college fund for Lia.
Elena stood by the kitchen window, watching Lia play on the floor with her new wooden building blocks. The crimson coat hung neatly by the door, a beacon of warmth in a home that had known only bitter cold.
“Mama,” Lia looked up, her bright eyes shining with excitement. “The tall man with the kind eyes came by the park today.”
Elena froze, her hand hovering over the kettle. “What tall man, my sweet?”
“The one who wears the dark suits and smells like cedarwood,” Lia explained innocently, stacking another block onto her tower. “He didn't say anything, but he gave the ice cream vendor money and pointed at me, and then the vendor gave me the biggest chocolate cone in the whole world.”
A chill ran down Elena’s spine. She remembered the towering figures who sometimes visited the Rinaldi estate—men who moved with absolute authority and quiet menace. But among them, she remembered the master of the house himself: Matteo Rinaldi. She had caught glimpses of him walking through the marble foyer, a man of striking presence, cold exterior, and an aura of immense power.
Could it be? Elena wondered. But why would the most feared man in northern Italy care about a humble housekeeper and her little girl?
Before she could dwell on it further, a gentle knock echoed at her apartment door.
Elena stepped cautiously across the floor and pulled the door open. Standing in the hallway wasn't a delivery boy or a collection agent. It was Luca, standing straight and respectful in a tailored charcoal suit, holding a formal leather portfolio.
“Mrs. Bellini,” Luca said, nodding politely. “I apologize for the unannounced visit.”
Elena’s heart raced, her hand gripping the edge of the doorframe. “Are… are you from Mr. Rinaldi’s household?”
“Yes, ma'am,” Luca replied smoothly. “Mr. Rinaldi asked me to personally deliver these documents regarding your employment status at the estate.”
He handed her the portfolio. Elena opened it with trembling fingers. Inside wasn't a termination notice or a reprimand. It was a formal deed transferring ownership of a fully furnished, modern two-bedroom apartment in a safe, quiet residential district of Milan directly to Elena Bellini, completely free and clear of any mortgages or encumbrances.
Beneath the deed was a permanent executive contract appointing Elena as the Head Administrator of the Rinaldi Foundation’s charitable division, with a salary that would ensure financial security for generations.
“This… this is a mistake,” Elena gasped, tears springing to her eyes. “I’m just a housekeeper. I can’t possibly run a foundation—”
“Mr. Rinaldi believes in people who know the true value of hard work and sacrifice,” Luca said gently, offering a rare, genuine smile. “And he asked me to pass along one specific message to you and your daughter.”
“What message?” Elena whispered.
May you like
“That wanting is no longer necessary, because your needs—and Lia’s—have finally been met.”
Luca gave a crisp, respectful bow, turned on his heel, and walked down the hallway, leaving Elena standing in the doorway with tears streaming freely down her face.
