Chapter 9 - A NEW FOUNDATION

The transformation of the Romano estate didn't happen overnight, but under Adrien's direct, unyielding supervision, the change was absolute and permanent.
Julian Vance's removal sent shockwaves through the syndicate, but no one dared question the boss when the details of the audit leaked to the inner circle. The skimming operation was dismantled, and every single worker cottage on the estate grounds was scheduled for complete renovation, insulation upgrade, and modern heating installation.
In the main house, the atmosphere shifted profoundly. The cold, forbidding marble halls began to echo with something entirely foreign: laughter.
Over the next few weeks, Clara made a full recovery under Dr. Vance's watchful eye. True to his word, Adrien reassigned her to the estate's extensive private library—a quiet, sunlit sanctuary filled with leather-bound first editions and historical records. It was a position of dignity, one that allowed her to work without breaking her health, while ensuring she and Lily were never more than a short walk away.
And Lily? Lily became the undisputed, unauthorized ruler of the Romano mansion.
The hardened enforcers, syndicate captains, and federal informants who occasionally visited the estate for high-level meetings were frequently left utterly dumbfounded. Men who had survived gang wars and federal indictments would walk into the grand foyer only to find the feared Adrien Romano—the ghost of Chicago—sitting cross-legged on the floor, helping a three-year-old girl tape a new felt ear onto a battered teddy bear.
No one dared to mock it. In fact, Miller and the senior guards took it upon themselves to ensure Lily had an endless supply of crayons, picture books, and custom-made miniature leather boots to polish alongside the boss's regular footwear.

Adrien found himself altering his schedule. Where he once spent sixteen hours a day locked in his study plotting strategy and managing territories, he now found excuses to leave meetings early. He would slip up the grand staircase to check on Lily's nap time, or find her sitting by the indoor fountain, dropping flower petals into the water while chattering happily away to an amused security chief.
The dark, hollow space inside his chest—the one left behind by the death of his parents and the betrayal of his ex-fiancée years ago—hadn't magically vanished, but it was filling up with something solid, warm, and real.
