Chapter 7 - The Siege of Chicago

Over the next forty-eight hours, the city of Chicago experienced a quiet, seismic earthquake.

Using the detailed financial documents and digital records recovered from Dominic Rossi’s seized vehicles, Adrien Romano delivered a mountain of indisputable evidence to the United States Attorney's Office via an anonymous federal courier. By Friday morning, federal marshals raided Rossi’s strongholds across the state, arresting thirty-five top-level operatives and crippling the rival syndicate permanently.

Adrien didn't fire a single bullet. He didn't have to. He used the law as his scalpel, carving out his enemies while keeping his own hands pristine.

Inside the Greystone mansion, things changed rapidly.

On Saturday morning, Grace walked down to the main kitchen, fully recovered from her fever, wearing her freshly pressed maid’s apron. She expected to begin her usual relentless routine of scrubbing marble floors, dusting heavy crystal chandeliers, and polishing endless rows of formal shoes.

When she entered the grand kitchen, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Standing at the marble island counter, wearing an apron over a silk shirt, was Adrien Romano himself. He was attempting, with extreme focus, to flip a pancake in a copper skillet.

Sitting on a high barstool across from him was Zoe, wearing a tiny chef's hat, clapping her hands delightedly as the pancake flipped in the air and landed back in the pan—slightly lopsided, but intact.

"Mama! Look!" Zoe cheered, pointing at the stove. "Mr. Boss is making circle cake!"

Grace stood frozen in the doorway, her jaw practically dropping to the floor. "Mr... Mr. Romano?! What are you doing?"

Adrien looked up, a faint flush of embarrassment coloring his neck, though his expression remained perfectly composed. He set the spatula down.

"Good morning, Grace," Adrien said calmly. "You are not cleaning today."

"I... I’m what?" Grace stammered.

"You are no longer the house maid," Adrien announced, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel. "As of eight o'clock this morning, you are the Estate Manager. I have hired a full housekeeping staff of six people who will handle the cleaning, laundry, and cooking under your direct supervision."

Grace’s breath caught in her throat. "Manager? Mr. Romano, I don't know how to manage an estate—"

"You managed to keep a child alive, keep this mansion immaculate, and work eighteen-hour days while suffering from a deadly fever," Adrien said, stepping closer to her, his dark eyes earnest and intense. "You have more intelligence, discipline, and integrity than any executive I employ. You will manage the staff, oversee the house budget, and live in the east wing apartment."

"The east wing...?" Grace whispered, her eyes widening. The east wing was the luxury guest suite, featuring ocean-view balconies, three bedrooms, and a private garden. "Sir, that’s... that’s impossible. We can't accept that."

"It's already done," Adrien said smoothly. "And your salary has been tripled, with a full educational trust fund opened today in Zoe’s name."

Grace covered her mouth with both hands, tears welling up in her eyes. She had spent five years running from an abusive past, living in dark basements, struggling to buy milk, terrified every single night that she and her daughter would end up on the streets.

Now, standing in this warm, sunlit kitchen, the most feared man in Chicago was offering her a life of safety, respect, and peace.

"Why?" Grace choked out, looking into his eyes. "Why are you doing all this for us?"

Adrien looked down at Zoe, who was currently dipping her finger into a bowl of maple syrup with absolute delight.

"Because for twenty years, people have entered this house to take things from me," Adrien said quietly, his voice filled with a deep, echoing sincerity. "They wanted my money, my territory, my power, or my life. You and your daughter are the only two people who ever came into my home and gave me something without asking for a single thing in return."

May you like

He looked back at Grace, his cold chest warming with a feeling he hadn't experienced since he was a little boy.

"This house has been a fortress for too long, Grace," Adrien said softly. "I think it’s time it became a home."
