Part 3: Emily's Secret Was Never Buried

Part 3: Emily's Secret Was Never Buried

The first light of dawn had not yet reached the stained-glass windows of the Kane mansion when the wedding ballroom was transformed into something no one had expected—a crime scene.

The orchestra had packed away their instruments. The champagne had gone flat. White roses that had symbolized celebration only hours before now stood like silent witnesses to betrayal.

Detective Vincent Ross carefully placed the tiny silver flash drive into an evidence bag.

"No one leaves," he announced. "Every member of the wedding staff, every guest, and every member of the Kane security team stays exactly where they are until we're finished."

Some of Chicago's wealthiest businessmen immediately protested.

"You don't have the authority—"

Ross didn't even look at them.

"I do now."

His badge flashed beneath the ballroom lights.

"And if anyone interferes with an active attempted murder investigation, I'll happily add another charge."

Silence returned.

Dominic Kane stood near the broken wedding cake, his tuxedo stained with frosting. For the first time in decades, the man who controlled shipping companies, warehouses, casinos, and construction contracts across the city seemed completely unaware of his own power.

His eyes never left Lily.

She sat beside Grace, clutching a cup of hot chocolate one of the kitchen staff had quietly prepared for her.

Nine years.

Nine birthdays.

Nine Christmas mornings.

Nine first days of school.

He had missed every one.

Not because fate had taken them away.

Because someone had stolen them.

And he had helped.

"Sir."

Dominic looked up.

Ross held out the flash drive.

"I think you should see this."

They moved into Dominic's private study, accompanied only by Grace, Lily, and two detectives.

The room smelled of leather and old books. Family portraits lined the walls.

Lily noticed something immediately.

"There."

She pointed toward a framed photograph on the fireplace.

A young woman with long brown hair smiled beside a younger Dominic.

She looked...

Grace closed her eyes.

"So much alike."

Lily slowly walked closer.

"She's beautiful."

Dominic's voice cracked.

"She was."

Lily reached up and touched the corner of the frame.

"My eyes..."

"They're hers."

"My smile?"

Dominic nodded.

"Hers too."

Lily looked back at him.

"You still kept her picture."

"I never stopped loving her."

Grace whispered, almost to herself,

"You just stopped trusting her."

Dominic had no answer.

Ross inserted the flash drive into Dominic's laptop.

A password screen appeared.

Eight letters.

Grace suddenly spoke.

"Try Firefly."

Dominic looked at her.

"Why?"

"When Emily couldn't sleep during her pregnancy, she'd sit on the porch and watch fireflies."

He typed the word.

The drive unlocked instantly.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Photographs.

Voice recordings.

Bank records.

Emails.

Scanned legal documents.

Ross stared.

"My God..."

Every folder had dates.

Everything had been organized by Emily herself.

She had expected someone to find this.

Eventually.

One folder was simply titled:

IF DOMINIC FINDS THIS

Dominic's hand trembled as he clicked.

Inside was only one video.

Recorded exactly nine years earlier.

The screen flickered.

Emily appeared.

She looked exhausted.

Her face was thinner than Dominic remembered.

One hand rested protectively over her pregnant stomach.

For several seconds she simply looked into the camera.

Then she smiled.

Not happily.

Sadly.

"If you're watching this..."

She took a shaky breath.

"...then either I've finally convinced you..."

"...or I'm already dead."

Dominic stopped breathing.

Emily continued.

"I pray I'm wrong about what I'm about to say."

She looked down for a moment before lifting her eyes again.

"Dominic... someone inside your circle is trying to destroy our family."

Ross immediately began taking notes.

Emily picked up several documents.

"I know you won't believe me without proof."

She held one paper toward the camera.

"I found payments."

Another page.

"Bribes."

Another.

"Insurance policies."

Another.

"Shipping records."

Finally...

Photographs.

Serena.

Adrian.

And a third man.

Dominic leaned closer.

"No..."

Ross frowned.

"You know him?"

Dominic nodded slowly.

"My cousin."

Anthony Kane.

The man who had inherited control of several Kane businesses after Luca's death.

Emily continued speaking.

"The three of them have been meeting for months."

"They've been moving money through shell companies."

"They've been paying witnesses."

"They've been telling people I'm seeing federal agents."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I never betrayed you."

Dominic covered his mouth.

"I know."

But she could no longer hear him.

"I was trying to protect you."

She gently rubbed her stomach.

"And protect our daughter."

Lily looked up.

"She knew I was a girl?"

Grace smiled through tears.

"She always knew."

Emily laughed softly in the recording.

"Dominic always wanted a little girl."

Dominic broke.

Completely.

He lowered himself into the chair as tears streamed down his face.

Emily's recorded voice continued.

"If something happens to me..."

"...please don't let our daughter grow up believing her father didn't love her."

Lily quietly crossed the room.

She wrapped her small arms around Dominic's shoulders.

He froze.

Then slowly embraced her.

For several long moments neither of them spoke.

Ross continued searching the drive.

Another folder.

MEDICAL

Inside was a hospital report.

Grace immediately recognized it.

"This..."

Her voice shook.

"This is impossible."

Ross looked closer.

"What?"

"The report says Emily survived."

Everyone stared at him.

"What?"

Ross enlarged the document.

Emergency admission.

Kenosha Memorial Hospital.

Patient: Emily Kane.

Condition: Critical.

Pregnancy: Viable.

Transfer requested.

Date...

Three days after the reported fatal crash.

Dominic stood so quickly his chair fell over.

"No."

Grace grabbed the report.

"I was told she died instantly."

"So was I."

Ross frowned.

"The official death certificate says something completely different."

He opened another file.

Then another.

Then another.

Every document contradicted the official investigation.

Someone had altered hospital records.

Someone had forged signatures.

Someone had declared Emily dead while she was still alive.

Lily whispered,

"Then... what happened?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Yet.

Another recording appeared.

This one was only thirty seconds long.

The timestamp was two days after the accident.

Emily looked much weaker.

There was oxygen tubing beneath her nose.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"If this reaches you..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...they found me."

A loud noise echoed somewhere off camera.

Emily looked frightened.

"Grace..."

She looked toward someone standing beside the bed.

"If they come..."

"...take my daughter."

Grace covered her face.

"I remember."

Emily continued.

"Tell Dominic..."

She smiled one last time.

"...I forgave him."

The screen suddenly shook.

Someone opened the hospital door.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

"They're here."

The recording ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Only darkness.

Ross slowly removed the flash drive.

"This wasn't an accident."

Dominic's eyes were cold now.

Colder than anyone in the room had ever seen.

"No."

Ross nodded.

"This was a conspiracy."

Grace whispered,

"They hunted her."

Dominic looked toward the sunrise beyond the study windows.

"They hunted my wife."

Lily quietly took his hand.

"And my mom."

He squeezed her fingers.

For the first time in nine years...

He did not let go.

A sharp knock interrupted the silence.

One of Dominic's security captains entered.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"We found Serena's vehicle."

"And?"

"It crashed near the old harbor."

Ross stood immediately.

"Did you find Serena or Adrian?"

The captain hesitated.

"No."

"What did you find?"

The man's expression darkened.

"In the trunk..."

"...there was another evidence box."

Ross's heartbeat quickened.

"Bring it here."

The captain placed a weathered metal case on the desk.

Its lock had already been forced open.

Inside were dozens of handwritten journals.

Every one bore the same elegant handwriting.

Emily Kane.

Grace gasped.

"She kept diaries."

Ross carefully lifted the first notebook.

A faded ribbon marked the final page.

He read the last sentence aloud.

"If they bury me, the truth will still breathe. Because secrets don't stay buried forever."

The room fell silent.

Dominic closed the diary with trembling hands.

"They buried my wife."

He looked at Lily.

"They buried our family."

Then his eyes hardened with quiet determination.

"But they never buried the truth."

Outside, the first rays of sunlight finally reached the Kane estate.

For the first time in nearly a decade, the darkness surrounding Emily Kane had begun to lift.

The lies were collapsing.

The evidence was growing.

And somewhere in Chicago, the people responsible for destroying one innocent family were desperately running out of places to hide.
