Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Days bled into weeks inside the Salerno fortress, and a strange, fragile domesticity took root within the marble walls.

Wren was officially moved into the luxury guest suite on the third floor, complete with silk sheets, a private bathroom, and a wardrobe of designer clothes that Dante had ordered anonymously through high-end boutiques in Manhattan. She refused most of them, preferring the simple, comfortable cotton clothes she had picked out herself, but Dante insisted on providing everything she could possibly need.

Nico thrived under her care. The frail, translucent infant who had hovered on the brink of death transformed rapidly into a chubby, bright-eyed baby with a voracious appetite and a loud, demanding cry whenever his schedule was delayed by even five minutes.

Dr. Ferris visited twice a week, each time shaking his head in sheer disbelief at the medical marvel unfolding before him. "It defies every textbook," the neonatologist declared during a Tuesday check-up. "His immune markers are off the charts. He's gaining weight faster than expected. Whatever chemical bond is occurring through the nursing process, it's creating a super-immune response."

Dante listened impassively from the corner of the room, his eyes fixed on Wren, who was carefully buttoning Nico’s blue onesie after the exam.

Over the past month, the walls between them had slowly, imperceptibly crumbled. They ate dinner together in the private family dining room—formal meals served in eerie silence at first, which gradually turned into quiet conversations about books, old memories, and the simple things of life that Dante had long forgotten and Wren had been forced to abandon.

Yet, outside the fortress gates, the underworld was boiling.

The remnants of the Calder syndicate, shattered by Dante's lightning-fast retaliation after the bombing, were regrouping. Driven by desperation and a thirst for vengeance, they knew that Dante’s primary vulnerability wasn't his money, his safe houses, or his men—it was his son.

Late one Friday night, while the estate was shrouded in a thick Atlantic fog, Mateo burst into Dante’s private study without knocking.

Dante looked up from a stack of financial ledgers, his dark eyes instantly sharpening. "Report."

"We intercepted an encrypted transmission on the outer perimeter comms," Mateo said, his face grim. "The Calders know about the boy's recovery. They know he's feeding from a civilian inside the house. They're planning an infiltration."

Dante stood up so fast his mahogany chair crashed backward onto the rug. The temperature in the room dropped to zero.

"When?"

"Tonight," Mateo replied. "They've hired a professional black-ops crew. They think if they take the baby, they can force you to sign over the entire shipping port authority in New Jersey."

Dante’s hands clenched into fists, his knuckles turning white. The dark, ruthless fury that had made his name a legend in the underworld flared to life in his chest. "Lock down the estate. Seal the third-floor panic room. Move the guards to the perimeter checkpoints."

"Boss," Mateo hesitated. "What about Wren?"

Dante stopped dead in his tracks. The thought of Wren—innocent, kind, fragile Wren—caught in the crossfire of a mafia war made his blood run cold.

"She stays with me," Dante said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, absolute command. "And if anyone touches a hair on her head, I want every single one of them buried before sunrise."
