Chapter 7 - Testing the Foundations

The true test of James's commitment came a month later, during the annual Crawford Industries Gala—a high-stakes event where the city's elite gathered to celebrate the firm's philanthropic contributions. Traditionally, James attended alone, standing at the head of the room like a solitary king.
This year, he arrived with Grace on his arm.
She looked breathtaking in a simple, elegant emerald-green gown. She was nervous, her hand trembling slightly against his sleeve, but she carried herself with the innate dignity of a woman who spent her days saving lives.
As they entered the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the room fell into a collective hush before the whispers began. The city's elite stared, judging, analyzing.
A prominent socialite and longtime acquaintance of James’s father, Victoria Sterling, glided over to them, a martini glass balanced precariously in her hand. "James, darling," she purred, her eyes scanning Grace with cold calculation. "We were all so surprised by your choice of guest tonight. We heard you’ve been spending time doing... charitable work in the outer boroughs."
The insult was thinly veiled, designed to humiliate Grace and remind James of his social standing. Grace stiffened, her grip tightening on James's arm.
James cleared his throat, his voice cutting through the surrounding chatter like a blade of ice. "Victoria, this is Grace Chen. And you are mistaken. My work with Grace isn't charity. Finding her was the greatest stroke of luck in my life. She is a pediatric nurse at City General. She spends her days making sure children survive their illnesses."
He looked around the circle of listening socialites, his voice raising just enough to ensure everyone heard. "In a room full of people who spend their lives spending money they didn't earn, Grace is the only person here who actually contributes something irreplaceable to this world. I would appreciate it if you addressed her with the respect she commands."
Victoria’s jaw dropped, and she excused herself hastily. Grace looked up at James, her eyes shining with tears, not of hurt, but of profound love.

"You didn't have to do that," she whispered.
"Yes, I did," James said, kissing her forehead. "Because you belong here. You belong anywhere I am."
