Part 10: The Kingdom Found

Six months later, the morning sun washed over the sprawling emerald lawns of the Moretti estate in a warm, golden glow.
The past was a shadow that had finally dissolved beneath the light of a new beginning. The syndicate had been permanently dismantled, its remaining leaders locked away in federal custody with no hope of ever seeing the streets again. Detective Miller had received a quiet, highly publicized promotion to captain of the municipal police department, a reward for finally helping clean out the corruption that had choked the district for decades.
On the eastern terrace of the manor, a brand-new, beautifully painted diner-style sign hung above a set of wrought-iron double doors.
ROSA’S & SOPHIA’S — FRESH COFFEE & PIE.
Inside the sunlit terrace kitchen, Rosa was humming happily as she pulled a tray of hot, golden-brown apple pies from a state-of-the-art commercial oven. Eleanor, looking healthier and stronger than she had in years, sat at a marble table near the garden windows, reading the morning paper and sipping herbal tea.
Out on the lawn, six-year-old Emma was lying on her stomach on a blanket of grass, furiously coloring a brand-new notebook filled with rocket ships, stars, and a very large, neatly drawn king wearing a gold crown.
Sophia walked out onto the terrace, holding a tray with two cups of black coffee.
She wore a simple, elegant ivory dress that caught the morning breeze. Her hair fell softly around her shoulders, and for the first time in years, the dark circles under her eyes were entirely gone.
Alessandro sat at a small iron table near the edge of the terrace, reviewing a stack of legitimate real estate development reports for the revitalized Tenth Street district.
Sophia walked over and set a cup of black coffee down in front of him.
Alessandro looked up. A slow, rare smile touched his lips—a warm, genuine expression that only she and Emma ever got to see.
"You're smiling at business papers again," Sophia teased lightly, sliding into the chair opposite him.
"Not business papers," Alessandro corrected, closing the folder and reaching across the table to wrap his large, warm hand around hers. "Community revitalization plans. The diner on Tenth Street is being rebuilt into a community center and bakery. Rosa will run the kitchen, of course."
Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? And who authorized that?"
"The primary stakeholder," Alessandro said smoothly, his dark eyes twinkling with quiet amusement.
Sophia laughed, a bright, carefree sound that drifted across the garden.
Out on the lawn, Emma looked up from her coloring book, spotted them, and waved excitedly.
"Mom! Alessandro! Come look! I drew a spaceship going to the moon!"
Alessandro stood up, pulling Sophia to her feet with him.
"Come," he said softly, intertwining his fingers with hers. "Let's go see the moon."

As they walked together across the sunlit grass toward the little girl, the sprawling empire of stone and steel around them no longer felt like a fortress or a cage.
It felt like home.
