Part 4: Choosing Peace

The holidays arrived three months later.

Normally, I would have hosted Thanksgiving.

Bought the groceries.

Cooked everything.

Listened to my mother criticize the mashed potatoes while eating three servings.

This year...

Charlotte and I stayed home.

We built blanket forts.

Burned the first batch of cookies.

Watched animated movies in pajamas.

At one point she looked around the living room and asked,

"Is this our Thanksgiving?"

"It is."

She smiled.

"I like this one better."

A few weeks before Christmas, there was another knock at the door.

Not my mother.

Not Kendra.

It was Nora's father.

Evan.

He looked exhausted.

"I'm sorry," he said before I could speak.

"I found the security video."

"I didn't know what they'd done until Melissa showed me."

He handed me a small wrapped package.

"For Charlotte."

Inside was a brand-new stuffed fox.

The same kind Nora had grabbed that day.

"There should have been an apology months ago."

I thanked him.

Then he said something that stayed with me forever.

"Children learn who they are from the adults around them."

"I don't want Nora learning this."

Over the next year, Evan separated from Kendra.

He enrolled both girls in a children's conflict-resolution program whenever they played together.

Slowly...

carefully...

Charlotte and Nora became friends again.

Not because adults forced them.

May you like

Because children forgive faster than grown-ups do.

As long as someone finally tells them the truth.
